Most Singer Merritt sewing machines do not drop the feed dogs. Instead, you place a cover over the feed dogs. Here's one replacement for the cover: https://www.sewingpartsonline.com/feed-cover-plate-singer-360-sewing-machine.aspx . This fits the Merritt 2404 and Merritt 3130, among others.

Which model is your sewing machine? There may have been several with the Merritt Lock name. The 14U44 Merrit Lock uses the same manual as the 14U44B.
