Re: Xbox live problems

Im assuming youre trying to fit a usb wireless adapter in the front, as you cannot install drivers it wont work, only the genuine XBOX 360 wireless adapter will work in the rear of the unit.

To connect your Xbox 360 gaming console to a NETGEAR router's wireless network:
  1. Turn off your Xbox 360 and disconnect anything from the I/O port on the back of the console.
  2. Insert your Xbox 360 wireless adapter to the I/O port as instructed by the wireless adapter manual.
  3. Connect the wireless adapter cable to your Xbox 360 I/O port.
  4. Flip up the network adapter's antenna.
  5. Turn on your Xbox 360.
    • If you are using an unencrypted wireless network, your Xbox should connect to it automatically and you do not need to proceed to Step 6.
    • If you are using an encrypted wireless network click the System tab, and then click Network Settings and continue with Step 6.
  6. On the Network Settings page, select Edit Settings.
  7. On the Edit Settings page, select your wireless settings on the Basic Settings tab.
  8. On the Select Wireless Network page, select your wireless network.
  9. On the WEP Network page, type your wireless network key, and then click Done.
  10. On the Apply Settings page, click Test Xbox Live.
  11. If this is the first time you have connected your Xbox 360 to Xbox Live, you will probably be prompted to apply an update. If there are no updates, the Xbox Live Connection page shows that you're connected to Xbox Live. Press the Y button on your controller to continue.

If testing the Xbox it says DNS failed, then update your NETGEAR router firmware:
  1. From your computer, open an Internet Browser and navigate to to download the firmware for your router.
  2. Log in to your NETGEAR router by browsing to or Enter the username (admin) and password. By default, the password is password or 1234 unless it has already been changed.
  3. Click Router Upgrade on the top left pane under Maintenance, browse for the firmware downloaded and click Upload.
  4. Wait for the router to reboot.

I keep getting dropped from xbox live with my wireless N router. Is this common? Is there a common setting I forgot to turn on?

Did you try moving the wireless adapter to a different location, possibly the front of the xbox to get a better signal. Make sure nothing is interfering with signal such as objects in the way or other obstructions to line of sight between the wireless router and the xbox. Try running xbox live on a wired connection to see if you have the same problems. If still have a problem then it is a ISP or xbox live issue and not your wireless adapater.

All i need is a wireless router and an adapter right?

If your router is protected by password you need to configure it but the only equipment you need is the router, the adapter and a provider.

Xbox 360 wireless adapter connection

Try resetting your router and reconfiguring. Secondly try using a different wireless security mode that the 360 adapter supports. If the router is a linksys, that could be the problem. Linksys has a very common drop problem. I have found that D-Link has better integrity for wireless devices. Also try putting another device on the network via Wireless, if the same result, replace the router. Also, you can do a search on google for wireless router tweaks, to optimize the router for and xbox wireless connection. One more thing. be sure you force an ip address for the adapter in the settings area on the 360. That promises the same IP everytime it connects. Then go into your router configuration and forward the ports for xbox live, the wireless connection may not even be dropping, but a port problem with live while trying to authenticate your game system

The following ports must be available for Xbox Live to operate correctly:
• UDP 88
• UDP 3074
• TCP 3074
