Check in the device manager, if the device is with the yellow question mark, uninstall the driver and reinstall the driver.

Want 1400x1050 resolution

It depends on the monitor too, and the refresh rates it can support.. But it seems to me that 256 MB is rather skimpy. Try changing the resolution to 1200x800 first. If the monitor or screen can handle it and it remains stable and no hangups in games or other demanding programs then try to change to some other higher resolution. Before you make any hazardous step backup your computer or set a restore point. In case of trouble you will be able to load the last configuration that worked.
Good Luck.

Iinstaled win xp, now monitor will not work. can i download and install driver onto flash drive without seeing my monitor

Turn your notebook off.
Turn your notebook on, and immediately start pressing the F8 key, once or twice per second,
until you see the Windows "start-up" menu (white text over a black background).
Choose the "start in VGA (low-resolution") mode" (or some wording similar to that).

You computer will start-up in '800-by-600-by-256-colours' mode, which should work.
Adjust the screen-resolution, and the number of colours to "optimal" values.

Unable to install driver and error it says is monitor resolution atleast it should be 800*600

This sounds familiar. What you need to do is download the motherboard INF setup or the motherboard drivers as they are sometimes called. Run that and windows will then be able to identify the hardware. At that point you can run the video driver and it should now install. When it is running you can change the screen resolution to higher as well as the colours to higher.

As a word of caution sometimes the drivers that you download from the manufactuers website won't work for the first install but the ones on the cd will.

Changing my colour on desktop

You'll have to run the game in compatibility mode, with the color depth set to 256 colors.

You do this by right clicking on the executable of your game. click on Properties. Compatibility tab. Click the check to run compatibilty w/ Window 98, and set the color depth to 256 Color. That should work! Happy gaming.

Unable to change color depth...

Ok I think i found your problem. You don't need to install any drivers.

Switch your display to 256 colors To switch your display to 256 colors
Some games and other software programs require that your monitor be set to 256 colors, or they run better in 256 colors. Many of those programs will switch your monitor to 256 colors automatically when you start the program. For those that don't, follow the steps below if you want to switch the display temporarily while the game or program is running.
  1. On your desktop or on the Start menu, right-click the game or other program that you want to run in 256 colors, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Compatibility tab.
  3. Select the Run in 256 colors check box.
  • The screen will revert to your default color quality when you close the program.
  • Try switching to 256 colors if your software program shows the wrong color or the graphics redraw slowly.
  • If your software program appears in a small window in the center of your screen, you can increase its size by changing your screen resolution temporarily. Follow the procedure above, but in step 3 select the Run in 640x480 screen resolution check box. Your screen resolution will revert to its previous resolution when you close the program.
  • The Compatibility tab is available only for programs or games located on your computer's hard disk. It is not available if the program is stored on a floppy disk, compact disk, or a network.
Please rate this if it fix your issue

Hi

It sounds like Drivers for the Video card is not loaded properly.

What is the current screen resolution?
Are you able to increase the resolution to say 800 x 600 pixel or preferably 1024 x 768 pixel?

If the current screen resolution is 640 x 480 pixel and you are unable to increase resolution to the above pixel levels, try updating Windows Drivers for your video card.
