Re: WiFi not recognized on Compaq laptop

This can happen sometimes, just go to network connections in control panel, right click on the wireless icon and click dissable (or press the rellevant button on your notebook) Restart pc and then right click on the icon again and select enable. There should be an icon in your taskbar, right click and select view network connections, and then see if your router is listed and click connect.

Why are both the Wireless and WPS lights on my modem\router always on solid green, when I only have a DSL connection?

The wireless and WPS lights solid green mean that the wifi and WPS are active. It also means that your home network is exposed to anyone with a laptop/pad/smart phone who knows how to hack into systems that have not been set up properly with the proper security.
I see the following security issues with your router:
1. The router's password is still the default or it does not have one.
(This means anyone who knows your router maker and model can easily break into your network and systems and steal your info, the router maker is broadcast by your wifi SSID, so they know it)
2. WPS is enabled and active (WifiProtectedSetup)(this service is a major security hole that is used by hackers to gain access to routers, it must be disabled for protection)
3. The wireless (wifi) connections are open (not encrypted), anyone can intercept the wireless traffic and read it. WPA2/AES encryption needs to be configured for the best protection.
4. The router's built in firewall may not be configured correctly exposing you to drive-by hacking.
To resolve these issues requires someone who understands router security and is best done onsite.
You need to engage someone you trust to check and configure your router and computer systems properly to protect yourself.

Hi i Just bought dlink 600 i am using compaq and has iphone and internet tv all of them cant connect by wifi my compaq can only connect with a cable. on my tv it says internet connection failed. and btw cm...

ok first prep. we need to configure your router. to do that we need your compaq laptop directly connected to the dlink via ethernet cable. after securing the connection, try to open a browser, whether internet explorer or mozilla firefox. go to the address bar and type in, it would ask you now for a username. username is " admin " password is " password " if it wont let you in, try "admin" for password. if it still cant, try to live it blank and just click on login. it would take you now to the dlink router page. there you can configure your wireless connection and set your network name. make sure to click apply settings after configuring it. then try to check your wireless connectivity again. this should work.

Cannot seem to get wireless connection . ethernet connection works fine . do i need usb adapter to bring my 3 year old laptop up to N standard ? Ray

If your laptop does not have a wireless card built into the computer then yes I would go and buy a usb wifi adapter because you cant get wifi if you dont get one.

Problem with wireless network connection.

Usually, new laptops now have a toggle switch for wifi. It means you have to switch your wifi ON so that it will start receiving signal and transmitting data to your router. Just locate your wifi switch and turn it ON.

Internet Connection Problem on One Computer

By any chance, are you trying to use something other than Windows to manage the wireless adapter? If you are, remove it.

Now, Click on Start, right click on Network highlight properties, and click on manage network connections on the Tasks menu.
Your two options will be the icons for your LAN and Wireless Network. Is it enabled and without red or yellow marks? It could be disable, it could be not connected and you can't view wireless networks because the switch is off, or it may just nut see your unsecure network (unlikely).

If the above is clear, right click on the wireless and highlight Properties and left click so it brings up the Networking tab. Highlight IPv4 and click on Properties. Make sure the Obtain dots are ticked. That should work, since you are running unsecured.
If it already is, check the red X or if it isn't click OK and close down the box.

Now, back to where your Wireless card is showing, right click it and you have Disable, Connect/Disconnect, Status, Diagnose etc.

If you're still Disconnected but not Disabled, click on Connect/Disconnect. Does it show your wireless network?

By this time, it should. If it doesn't post back. The other possibility is that you take your computer to a wireless internet cafe, McDonalds, Panera Bread, or motel with WiFi and test it there.

Connection problem

don't shout at me, but many of the older compaq laptops did not come with a wireless nic installed, and the ones that did sometimes did not support G let alone N.

If able you need to check that the Wireless NIC if installed/avaliable supports your wireless router or most likly the otherway round.

firstly I would try removing any USB wireless adapters that you may have in use from one of your other computers and try it in the compaq, if sucessful you know that it is not your setup of your home network at fault.

My wrieless network connection is properly installed but i can not connect internet using my laptop

Dear Ditditong,

First is your wifi switch on the compaq enabled. It is suppose to be lighted and an icon on the task bar will tell you it is.

Second, check your Wifi OS set-up if properly done ; if not use the windows wizard to accomplish this.

Third, Make sure your D-link has been properly set-up for wireless set-up to be able for you to access the router. The manual might have information along this line.

Partial internet connections

A quick workaround is to assign static/fixed IP address to the Compaq. Just follow the numbers listed on the Dell and simply add 1 to the IP. Example if Dell PC1 uses IP Add of and PC2 uses both with Subnet Mask of and Default Gateway of, then set the Compaq to, & Likewise, replicate the DNS Server numbers from the Dell to the Compaq.

If this does not work out for you or for some reason you prefer to have a DHCP assigned number, please post back, specific model of the Compaq, Operating System, the WiFi Networking card of the Compaq, security settings (WEP, WPA, MAC Filter) Further, please describe "partially working", what works and what doesn't.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back details as above requested or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
