How to check a power supply

For this you could get a power supply tester from Amazon or Cyber Guys. It will check all the voltages required from each connector for it to be good. An alternative, if you are good with a multimeter, is to check basically for +-12Volts and +- 5volts on most of the connectors. You may need to download the schematic from the web.

My dell5000 will not turn on and the power on light has turned orange , and weakly flickers.

I would say that the first thing to check is the power supply. Find a spare connector, Red is 5volts exactly! and yellow 12volts approx. Then disconnect the hard drive/s and RAM. Boot fom there and monitor what happens. It could have a faulty drive or RAM.

Hope a power supply will fix it and not a new motherboard!

POWER UP AND IMMEDIATELY POWERS DOWN PC WORLD SUGGEST THIS IS A BLOWN MOTHERBOARD HOW MUCH IS A FIT MYSELF NEW MOTHERBOARD

This could be a power supply fault,check the volts on the red,yellow and earth lead(black)THE RED LEAD =5VOLTS
YELLOW LEAD=12VOLTS.WHITE=-5VOLTS
BLUE=-12VOLTS,PURPLE,=+3.3VOLTS
BROWN=+5VOLTS VSB
BLACK=GROUND.
Diconnect the pc mains plug from the computer.
Disconnect the power supply leads from the motherboard,and switch on and check the volts on all leads of all those I mentioned.If these are present when they are not connected to the main board,then the problem is with the motherborad,most likely the bios chip is faulty.This chip kicks starts the PC into coming on.Failing this send the PC back to where you bought it and let them fix it.
IT COULD ALSO BE THE MAIN ON OFF SWITCH AND THE CABLE ITSELF FAILING.CHECK THIS WITH AN OHM METER ON X1 OF THE RESISTANCE SCALE.DISCONNECT THE MAINS PLUG FIRST.

I have lost the external power supply for my 1TB laCie (300797U). I have another power supply that has physically the right connector, but I'm not sure if the voltages are right. The supply I have is a...

The voltages are right because hard drives use 12volts for the motor drive and 5volts for the digital logic circuits.
The only thing I don't know is the correct voltages for the various pins, there is a possibility it may not suit the LaCie.
This maybe a standard configuration for external USB hard drives, you need to check with LaCie.

Bios don't boot on p7n platinum sli

check the voltage on the power connector going to the hard disk.
it should have 12volts in red and black wire and 5volts on the yellow and black wire.

the main problem the optical and hard disks can't be recognized is the low voltage supply the drives gets.

I would like to know how to troubleshoot a brand new Ultra LS600 power supply. I would like to go beyond hearing "it's dead" since I am getting power to the motherboard (via indicator light)m but the PSU...

You can start the PSU manually with a paper clip.
Remove the 20 pin connector from the motherboard, leave the four pin power connectors attached to your various drives (this will provide a load on the power supply when it start up (provided it is not faulty).
Look at the 20 pin connector with the connector facing you.and the locking clip to your left.
The fourth pin from the bottom LH corner should be a green colour wire and the next two wires (5th & 6th pin) should be black and next to the locking clip.
Straighten a paper clip and insert it into the 4th pin and into the 5th or 6th pin (ie connect these wires together). These wires connect to the front panel switch to turn on your computer. You are testing the power supply only and since it is not connected to the motherboard the computer won't start.
Now connect the power unit to the mains and switch on the mains, if the power supply is OK the PSU fan should spin up and your hard disk should also spin up. If nothing happens the the PSU is faulty.
You can test the +5volts and +12volts supply on a 4 pin power connector with a multimeter. The red wire is +5volts and the yellow wire is +12volts and the black wires are negative (ground). The voltage readings should be within 5% of these voltages.
There are other voltages to be checked +3volts, -5volts, & -12volts. but these are not as critical.
