Question about Garmin Rino 110 (14 Channels) 2-Way Radio

1 Answer

I have a pair of head phones that are PTT. They work, but will not transmit when in the radio. It worked for a while, but will no longer transmit, and again the headset works fine on other radios. And the radio works fine when you use the press to talk on the radio device.

Odd that it calls itself. I suspect a weak battery on the no transmit unit. Radios require a lot of power to transmit and little to receive. Even if the charger says charged, it is more often the battery than not. If you have the walkie hooked up to the transformer and try talking on it (not recommended) it still could be the battery. Other issues: liquid damage, dropped, etc.

After cloning transmits only once

Out of habit, after I clone a radio, I turn it off before transmitting. I think it does a reset and saves the information. So, do that, turn it back on and try again. If the problem persists, try manually or with the software programming it. If it still will not save the information, the radio is in need of repair. Please post if this worked.

Active headset

Your headset is operating in VOX mode. This sometimes will happen if the headset is plugged into the radio when the radio is still turned on. Try unplugging the headset, turn on the radio, then talk using the PTT on the radio. Shut the radio back off. Then insert your headset plug, being certain it is seated (click) into place. Then turn the radio back on and see if it works without VOX. If you are still having problems, press the PTT on the radio one more time and see if it shuts it off.

When I press PTT the walkie talkie turns off

Dead, shorted, not fully charged, bad battery connection, or bad battery.

Motorola talkabout MJ270R switching off when transmitting

Turning off while transmitting is typically a sign of a weak or bad battery. However, since you mention it happens with either battery type, another cause might be the length of time you are depressing the PTT button. These radios have a fail-safe to prevent damaging the final amplifier of the radio. To protect itself the radio will shut down or stop transmitting after the PTT button is held in too long. This being said, I'd check the batteries first. The rechargeable battery pack which came with the radio has a one year life expectancy. A battery can test full when it is weak and might not hold the charge when placed under a load. And usually transmit is the first thing to fail.

Best regards.

Radio stuck in RX mode.

Your PTT button is possibly at fault. It may be partially depressed, leaving your receiver open. Behind your PTT button there is an internal PTT button on the componet board. It may be stuck or defective.

Transmit button on the lapel mic will not key the radio

Two things which come to mind, one would be if the PTT on the remote mic is bad/defective, second would be you are plugging the audio device in with the radio turned on.

If your remote mic is failing, the PTT is a repairable item, as is the cord on most models.

T8500 blinks off and back on often when transmitting

It takes more energy to transmit than to receive. It is possible you have an old or defective battery pack, a bad connection to the battery, or your PTT button is not working properly. On this unit, the internal PTT button can begin to be bent further in from repeated use, or pressing too firmly.

As far as a more durable/reliable radio, you might want to look at radios in the business division such as the Motorola CP110, BPR40 or the CP150. These business level radios are built to work a 40+ hour work week, and are much more reliable than the consumer division products, which are intended for occasional usage.
