SOURCE: water filter replacement
I have the same problem. I did change the filter located on the bottom front panel of the refrigerator, but the red light is still on and NO ice. I can't figure it out and I know if I call a tech, its a 300.00 bill. Frustrated.

down in the front grill at the bottom of the fridge you will see the filter and just the the left of it you will see a button. push the button in and that will pop the filter out a bit. pull it out and put the black cover that was on your old filter and put on your new one. then just push it in

This may not be the problem now but by the sound of the malfunctioning unit, it could be in the future. The start device on some models of refridgerator for maytag and whirlpool have been recalled. If your appliance was manufactured in the last 5-10 years you may be having an issue with this component. Mine recently caught on fire at this device that is located near the compressor. If you would like to be a part of the petition for a recall on this appliance contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org judging from the smell you are encountering, the device could already be malfunctioning
