Question about Arris SURFboard SBG900 Wireless Router (DHSBG900)

Motorola SB5100 and linksys router connection

Hi,

I have a cable modem motorola sb5100 which was connected to my neighbour pc by a cable. I couldnt use it so I brought home wireless router linksys and connected it to the modem unplugging my neighbour. Now after setting up wireless internet my laptop connects fine and I have internet connection wirelessly. But when I try to plug my neighbour to the router so she can still use the internet via cable she doesnt have an internet although she is connected to the router.

There is no more place for plugs in the cable modem so it's either her connected or router (and I can use the internet wirelessly). I gave her all the network configuration to enter manually in her LAN connection but it still doesnt work. Is it any chance to make it work for both of us?

    Hi T,

When I was setting up the router while cable-connected to my laptop I used 192.168.1.1 to enter the settings configuration. Then I took all network provider details (IP, subnet, gateway and 2 dns) from the motorola cable modem and after connecting back with the cable to my wireless router, I typed those manually. After that I could use it wirelessly but only, obviously, when router was connected to the modem. But as it uses the same Ethernet cable, when the router is plugged-my neighbour has to be unplugged. SO I though connecting her to another ethernet cable place on the router will solve the problem. I have even given her the same details which I obtained from the cable modem but she still cannot access the internet despite being conencted to the wireless router.

I assume that you use the Linksys router as DHCP server for you and your neighbour.
Please give more details regarding the configuration of the Linksys router.

    Best regards,
    T

The only thing that you need to setup on your Linksys for it to work with cable is to make sure that DHCP is enabled on the router.  You will need to plug your router into the modem via the ethernet cable and then plug your neighbors pc into a link port on the router (the cable modem plugs into the internet port)  You will also need to follow the reboot procedure.  Power everything off.
1: Turn on the surfboard and wait about 1 minute for the surfboard to make a connection with your ISP (the link light should come on).
2:Turn on your router and wait for your router to sync up with the surfboard . 3: Turn on your computer. Whenever you plug anything into a cable modem, you must recycle power to the modem.  It "remembers" the last device that was plugged into it, so it's memory needs to be cleared.

The wireless connection is not working. The only network that shows up is lynksis wich has a waek connection and asks for a password that i have neever had to use before, so i dont know what the password...

Unfortunately the Motorola SB5100 SURFboard is not a wireless device. The Linksys you are trying to connect to is most likely someone in your area and they have it password protected, which is why it is asking for a password.

In order to setup Wireless you will need to invest in a Linksys, Netgear, D-Link, or some other Wireless Router. They can be found at any computer store.

Once you have the wireless router you can connect an Ethernet cable from the Motorola SB5100 SURFboard to the Wireless Router. From there follow the instructions for the Wireless Router you purchased to set it up and secure it.

If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response.

Thank You,
Brandon

Is a Belkin N+ wireless router compatable to a Motorola modem SB5100?

No - one it is a modem, the other is a router.
The modem 'translate' the data as it comes into your network.
Routers connect computer (direct traffic).

Need to get wireless on my laptop,

No, the SB5100 is just a cable modem, not a wireless router. You will need to keep your sb5100 but you will need to purchase a wireless router if you want wireless on your laptop. If you can also plug your laptop into the sb5100 via an ethernet cable for your internet connection. Linksys and Belkin and others make wireless routers that you can use for your wireless connections.

Can't connect Motorola sb5100 to a Linksys wrt54g

Make sure that you have the ethernet cord from your modem plugged into the WAN/Internet port on your router. Then unplug the power cord from your cable modem and plug it right back in. After the modem fully comes back online, unplug the power cord on the wireless router and plug it back in. wait 30 - 60 sec and then try and connect.

Most cable companies only allow one active"CPE" at a time for internet access. All this means is when you change what is connected to the cable modem you must always reboot the cable modem to allow access.

Hope this helps. Let me know if it does not work.

Inability to connect to Internet

The easiest solution would be to use an ethernet connection. A second problem is probably on most cable modems you can either use a USB connection OR an ethernet connection you cannoot use both at the same time.

MY LINKSYS WRT54G WONT READ MY COMPUTERS INTERNET CONNECTION

Ok to start the yellow ethernet port should be connected straight to the Linksys router in the ethernet in port. Then you connect the cmputer to one of the other the 4 ports on the back of the wireless router. wala you shouldn't have any more trouble after that.
