Make sure the door is completely closed and latched. On models with a dual-digit display, the control displays "- -" during a cycle if it believes the door is not latched. Where is the resume botton on mp170

I believe it is the OK button from the description on page 12 in this link to your instruction manual from Canon for your Pixma MP170.

The resume button was continually flashing and would not print. After turning on and off several times, checking ink and making sure the lid on printer was down, the flashing stopped but still won't print,...

On that machine the resume button flashes a certain number of times and then the green power light flashes, you need to count the flashes inbetween the green flashes to know what the problem is. That count tells a repair shop what is wrong.

Printer trouble

Power cycle the printer. If problem remains, try a partial reset. You can do the partial reset as follows:
1. Unplug and replug the unit.
2. when lights flash on power up, hold down the ON/RESUME and PAGE SIZE buttons together.
3. When only the ON/RESUME button light flashes, you can release the buttons.
4. When the lights stop flashing, the reset is all done!

If problem remains, you are fully justified to ask HP to replace the unit for you (well, if you're still in warranty!). Good luck :)
