Question about Seagate STCA4000100 - 4TB Backup Plus Desktop Black External Hard Drive

1 Answer

Just bough this hard drive, and when I plugged it in, drivers were installed but it was not recognized by the computer. Tried to initialize it through disk management (windows), but got a cyclic redundancy check error. Is there a way to format/initialize this?

If you just bought this drive, I would suggest to return it to the store and ask for a replacement. Don't forget to bring in your receipt of the store, when you bought it.

This is a good read on what this error actually means:

What I recommend is reformatting the drive under Computer Management, and seeing if that fixes the problem.

If you have tried it on two PCs with the same result, the hard drive is most likely defective. If so, the computer may recognize it being plugged in with a beep but will not recognize it at all as an accessible device.

One thing you can check is if the hard drive was never initialized, meaning that there is empty space but the empty space isn't configured for the operating system to recognize and use. To do this:

- Go to "Start" and "Run" and type in "diskmgmt.msc" and hit "Enter".
- A list will pop-up listing all hard drives on computer. Each row is a physical hard drive.
- The main hard drive for your computer should be listed as "Disk 0" and the local disk in it should be "C:".
- Assuming you have no other hard drive besides the external, the next row should be "Disk 1" and say "Unallocated", which means the hard drive was never initialized. In this case, right-click on it and select "Format". Click next through everything and the external HDD will be formatted so that Windows can recognize it.
- MAKE SURE NOT TO FORMAT LOCAL DISK C:!
- After that, the external HDD should be recognized fine and pull up in "My Computer".

Otherwise, if no other hard drive is listed, the external HDD is most likely defective and you will need to purchase a new one.

Did you have to install a driver for it initially? Try reinstalling the driver, if so.

I thought most drives were plug and play. If it does not have a driver, trying using a different USB port. Sometimes the ports can freak out and not recognize the item plugged in, especially if you use multiple items in the same port. (ie, cameras, cell phones, printers, etc)

Hope this helps at least some. Good luck!

No Hard Disc found after crash

Compaq uses F10 at boot to initiate the recovery program resident on the hard drive partition normally called "Recovery". If you cannot initiate the hard drive at boot then press F1 to get to setup and see if the hard drive is recognized there. If it is not then you will have to troubleshoot the hard drive.
If you have another laptop to try the hard drive out or a laptop to IDE hard drive adapter  (cheap) to connect to a desktop computer as a slave drive you will either verify that the hard drive is bad or it is good and a boot sector problem is at hand. Also if you can get the drive recognized as a slave drive you can either rescue data or format the drive.
These are preliminary steps so post again when you have more information. Steve Medley

SimpleTech hard drive not found by my computer

This may or may not help, but it worked for me! After about 4 hours of trying everything (Device Manager/Uninstall, Disk Management, etc..) nothing at all would work. The USB external hard drive would power up but when you plug it in, the New Found Hardware will pop up and search unsuccessfully for drivers for a PLUG AND PLAY external drive!?!?!

In any event, I simply plugged another USB drive into my laptop (and desktop) and viola! The new hard drive was recognized and installed immediately as 'plug and play' should do. I then unplugged the new drive and tried plugging in the one that was recognized and all of the sudden....IT WORKS AGAIN!!!!

This fix might not help anyone who doesn't have a second USB external drive, but you could try plugging another USB device in and get it to load and then unplug it and try your drive. It worked for me on my laptop and then I did the same thing to my desktop (which also wouldn't recognize it) and it worked on the desktop too! Problem solved for me, thank GOD!

Hopefully, this bypass can save you a few hours of google time and unwanted anguish. Like I said, you may not have another USB drive but try plugging in any other USB device until it loads and then unplug it and then plug in your USB drive that wasn't working. It worked perfectly for me.

Hope it helps!!!!

Firelite 160gb HD not recognized

Make sure that there is no "HD protection", in which the hard drive can only be connected to one computer. Also, try going to google and searching for some drivers for your computer to download and install. Then try plugging your hard drive in again.
