Here are the keys you find on athe keyboard of a Windows laptop. From left to right.
CTRL Control Key
Fn Fn-ness key that controls the function keys(Esc, F1, to F12). For example on the Fujitsu I am using right now Fn+F3 mutes the volume of the speaker., Fn+F6 dims the screen display. The Fx keys have some icons to help you remember what the Fn+Fx key combinations do.
Left of Fn key us a Windows logo icon. The key brings up the Start menu.
The ALT is used in combination with CTRL or with other numeric keys (on a numeric keypad) to enter some characters that the keyboard configuration may not have.
Right of Space bar is the ALTChar (or ALT Gr) also.to enter some characters`.
Right of ALT Gr/Cr is the Windows menus key. Depending on the window that is active (has the focus) the Menu key displays a drop down or pop up menu from which to select one of the available options.
Then you have the Right CTRL key. Play with them to see what they do.

You can try reseating the keyboard connector. If that doesn’t work, the keyboard needs to be replaced. To reseat the keyboard connector, follow this link: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins5100/en/sm/keyboard.htm#1084976
Be sure to remove AC power and the Battery.

Perhaps you can check your manual. Many notebook keys do not function as expected. If you do not have the manual, you may download one here:

SOURCE: I use dell inspiron 1440 notebook. There is no no.

Although there is no num lock button on the keyboard, it can still be turned on - either via external keyboard or the onscreen keyboard in windows. However, the keyboard on this notebook does not have keys which are dedicated to become number keys when numlock is on, so it wouldn't impact usage of the keyboard in the slightest.
onscreen keyboard is located here

How do you turn the sound up and down?

Hi Patricia,

What is the make/model of your laptop and what operating system are you using?
First is to look at your keyboard. All of your keys will have your main characters assigned to each key in bold, white letters, but some may have other characters or symbols in a different color.

This is a good example from a Dell keyboard where you have the volume keys above the numbers 7, 8, and 9 on the very top row (mute/volume down/volume up respectively). It's easy to see taht you simply hit these keys to mute, lower or raise your volume...very straight forward.

You also see that this keyboard has some smaller blue characters on the top row, set as the Function Keys. To access these you first hold the "Fn" key on the very bottom left of the keyboard (between Ctrl and the Windows key) and then press the top row to access the related function. I only point this out as some laptops have the Volume Up/Down set as such, where you will have to hold down and alternate key first (usually the same color) and then press or hold down that second key to activate it.

Good luck!

How do I find numerical lock button on Dell windows 8 keyboard?

On the Dell 0Y3740 for the Dell Inspiron 500M or Latitude D800, the Num Lock (Lock replaced by a symbol) key is on the top row of keys. It's a short row and the Num Lock is the third key from the left (or the fifth key from the right). In blue, the key has Scroll and the lock symbol.

On a slightly different model, the key may be in a different spot. However, it will probably have a similar placement near the Print Screen and Pause/Break keys. (Usually these keys will be near the function keys or just above them for a keyboard without a separate 10-key area.)

I hope this helps.

Use CTRL-ALT-DELETE to unlock it.
Or, hold-down the power button until the computer turns off.
Then, turn it on.

Where is the number lock on this keyboard?

As with most laptops there is no number lock key. you dont have the number pad like most desktop keyboards. you have a (fn) key this works for all the keys that have a square around them it may be blue/white/purple, and is located on the bottom left should be the second key on the bottom left row right next to the ctrl key. but once again there is no number lock key.

On Saitek eclipse II illuminated keyboard: What is function of the 1 (above the f8), the A (aboveF9) and the down arrow between F10 and F11) Also the function of the dey on bottom row between the windows...

Hi,

The 1, A and down arrow represent the usual Num Lock active, Caps Lock active and Scroll lock on option available on all keyboards out there.

The 'dey' key on the bottom between the Windows Key and the Ctrl acts as a right mouse button, as in opening the menu you would open with the right mouse click.

Hope it helps.

The symbols on the keys represent what will appear on screen

If the symbol is in blue that means you have to press the FN key over on the left side bottom row

Other symbols from the keyboard are typed by using the shift key

You can always buy a keyboard and plug it into the laptop if it proves to difficult
