Question about Amana PTH123B25AJ Heat Pump Air Conditioner

2 Answers

I have a ptac that's just over a year old. Just recently started having a problem with the cold air. Cold air shuts off after a short time, with the fan continuing to run (doesn't matter how low I set the temperature). I can get it to cycle back on by disconnecting the thermostat wire from the front of the control board, and reconnecting it. The first time I tried this the unit seemed to work fine for a few days. Now, when using this method, it will work for only a short period.

This means there is a fault in relay section in PCB or might be loose connection in connector. Pls reconnect the connector again and tight that connector with cable tie and any tape then see , if it works then fine if not means problem in contractor. Just clean that

Try setting the fan control to "AUTO" this will cause it to cut out with the compressor.

SOURCE: Air conditioning unit Amana Asx130361AA comes on,

You have probably a compressor start capacitor or relay damage and you have to replace first capacitor and if problem insist then go to the relay. If the problem insist then you have a complete compressor failure. Often when this happens the compressor will "lock up" or not be able to turn when power is supplied to it. Overheating or lack of lubrication are usually the main causes of compressor failure. Overheating can be caused by the outdoor coil around the compressor getting clogged with dirt, leaves, or grass. Loss of the refrigerant charge will also cause the compressor to overheat. It is the cool return gas coming back to the compressor that helps to keep it from overheating.

As you can see there are many things that can go wrong with an air conditioner and I have not come close to exhausting the possibilities here. I have just touched on the most common problems in a very basic way.
There are some basic trouble shooting things that can be done very easily. Most problems are above out of the range of comfort for many homeowners and professional help should be consulted before any attempt is made at repairs. Remember also, that the release of refrigerant gases into the atmosphere is a federal offense in the
US. Proper care must always be taken to minimize the release of any gases. A license is also required to handle refrigerants. Make sure that the professional you call has the proper certifications to handle refrigerants properly

SOURCE: Amana PTAC

I know this is late but I had to add a solution to this problem since I had the exact same problem and was able to solve it. The probelm is not your control board. On these units, the heat pump compressor will not kick in unless the temperature you set on the control panel is within 2-1/4 degrees (or 4 degrees depending on your unit model. Otherwise, the unit locks out the compressor until the electric heat coil bring the indoor temperature up to that level - and then will switch the compressor back on for heat pump operation. So the problem is not the control panel or the compressor, it the electric heat coil. The coil has two manual limit switches on it that may be tripped and should be checked. The coil can be easily accessed by shutting down the power, removing 4 screws around the air outlet, pushing the screen up and sliding the panel out the top. The power wires can remain in place while the limit switches are reset. Hope it works.

the unit works by chilling air and the byproduct is heat in the compressor, this is used for heating in the winter and then reversed in summer to blow cold air. It has to blow cold and warm up before it can blow heat.

One thing you might check is to make sure there is not cold air blowing across the thermostat from one of the vents. I've seen this many times make the thermostat short cycle.

Some less expensive thermostats may be programmed to short cycle. If you have instructions available for the thermostat, try to find information or the "heat anticipator". It may have an adjustable setting.
