Using different sizes of same brand memory on a PC

I have a few OCZ memory modules...they are the same PC3200 but I can't use them together. Do I have to change something in my bios to make them work?

They are the same speed... PC3200...but different sizes and steps.

The issue is not the total amount of memory, which will be less than 2 gigs...its having the memory work together...same brand...same speed..PC3200...only difference is type...ie platinum..titianium...and the steps...ie...2-3-2-5 are different. I thought if you used the same memory it would just take the slower speed...but accept the memory...if I use them together...it will only recognize one or the other. There has to be a trick to make it work :-(

    what is your operating system

Sometimes forcing a specific timing in the BIOS will allow the modules to work together but normally they either work or they don't. Some motherboards are more tolerant than others.

If its a 32 bit os it will only recognize 3 gb of memory.

place the 2 higher speed in the first slot closest to the cpu and in the 3rd slot. then slower speed in slot beside it and farthest to cpu. or side by side if your memory slots are set up that way. usually the slots are colored in pairs and will tell you how they are set up. if they are all one color then its slot 1-3-2-4 just be sure the highest is closest to cpu. also you have to atleast have a pair of same speed if you are installing 3 memory modules, and with 4 each pair have to be matching speeds. if not it will slow your pc down more.

  • Dwayne Apr 25, 2009

sorry. i meant higher memory size. follow steps with memory size. highest to pc, smallest away from pc. keep in mind how the memory slots are set up. same rule aplies to memory size too when installing 3-4 modules, but you can run with different sizes. just follow the same steps.

Computer memory upgrades for HP Compaq Presario SR1710NX Desktop PC...

Lists memory compatible with your machine.
Memory Type: DDR PC3200, DDR (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 4GB
Slots: 4icon_note.gif Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.

I have also found that the memory occasionally is not recognized. To fix remove the ram and clean electrical contacts with a clean pencil eraser. (Rub the contacts to clean.) Then replace memory. (My machine failed to boot, cleaning the contacts fixed the problem.

I bought P3200 ddr 400 1gb memory and when i install it , it does not show up. any ideas why and if there is something i can do .

The Intel® Server Board S875WP1-E supports both ECC and Non ECC Unbuffered PC2100 (266 MHz), PC2700 (333 MHz), or PC3200 (400 MHz) compliant Double Data Rate (DDR) memory modules. Dual channel memory functionality requires two DIMM modules installed into DIMM sockets 1A & 1B, and then DIMM sockets 2A & 2B. The DIMM module size, speed and vendor must be the same.

You can install a single 128 MB memory module into DIMM socket 1A. The minimum supported memory size is 128 MB. The minimum main memory configuration is a single 128 MB memory module, and the maximum configurable memory size is 4GB. With only a single memory module installed, the system will only operate using a one memory channel.

Third party memory vendors may use the same module part number with different
DRAM vendors and die revisions. To insure proper system operation, verify that each DRAM
vendor and die revision has been separately tested and qualified. Please notify CMTL if there is a discrepancy.

I have a dell optiplex gx270, tried to upgrade my memory with samsung 1gb pc3200 ddr1 but doesnt work, just beeps on start up.

That is the correct memory module (Non-ECC).

Remove all memory modules.
Insert the one Samsung PC3200 module and start up.
If it doesn't boot, then try a different slot.
If it works ok, then add-in your original mamory modules. If they are PC2700, then they may not work together.

Tried to add RAM but now computer won't turn on

Didn't we speak online about this a couple of days ago? You can't mix and match RAM. What you added is probably not the right config for that machine. You need to go to this link, plug in your machine information and then REPLACE, NOT ADD TO what you have.

MS 7142 TO INCREASE RAM

hiya

its a case of purchasing the new ram modules taking the old ram out and popping the new ram in

i wud recommend using OCZ, GEIL or Crucial memory modules as these are the best makes

the spped of the ram varies from system to system depending on the system bus speed
the most common speeds for this board is pc2100, pc2700 and pc3200
these speeds are as follows pc2100 - ddr200
pc2700 - ddr333 and pc3200 - ddr400

hope this helps

I have purchashed additional ram (ddr 400 pc3200 1gig) after installation the pc locks up and informs that new hardware has been found! what do i do next?

Hi,

Generally this will happen when you install the RAM with diff specifications or unsupported size (MBs).

Points to be noted before replacing the RAM:

* Maximum memory supported by your computer.

* Memory specifications compatiblity.

You can get the memory module specfications of your computer from its manufacturer.

If this is happening even after installing the correct RAM then you have to try with diff brand RAM.

While manufacturing the RAM, they have to follow many standards. If they won't follow those standards, then this issue may accout. So, check with another brand.

Pls reply if you need more information

Memory upgrade

you can use any DDR 180pin. But having two RAM of different speeds may not be compatible sometimes, so upgrade it to 1Gb by just using (1) 1Gb pc3200.
