Laptop running Vista gets 'blue screen' and shuts itself down

I have a Dell inspiron 1420 running Vista. I have had it for about 1.5 years at least I would say and recently it is shutting itself down suddenly - going to the dreaded blue screen and then to the screen that gives the option to start in safe mode or normally, the latter by default if I don't select an option in a specified amount of time.

It has been doing this a couple of times a day for the last couple of days. It has happened before this but only on the odd occassion and then no problems. Any idea what could be causing this? I am on an island in a foreign country where I don't think that the computer 'shop' would have that much more knowledge than me so don't want to risk taking it there and having more problems.

I do have my computer on for many hours at a time often and it is a warm climate and though the left side of the computer feels warm to touch I can feel a fan is working underneath where there is a vent. Every now and then I notice an ant crawling on my computer though not always so i don't think they're living inside.

Sorry, I posted this in the wrong place. Have moved it to the Dell inspiron 1420 area.

Is this something I can do myself by taking out the screws on the bottom, cleaning the fan, and then blowing air over the rest to dislodge any dirt/dust/dead insects?

Thanks so much. Will find the right size screwdriver and give it a go :)

This type of problem happens a lot. Usually its associated with heat and dirt(dust). A good cleaning will increase your air flow and probably fix your problem.

Either way you MUST see whats happening can certainly be insects clogging critical areas...I've seen it before.

Yes you can do that...just be aware when you are taking things apart you are paying attention to detail...some things can be spring loaded,...others can fit together by google for proper take down on your laptop...

I would search for "cleaning my Dell laptop" try other key words like internal cleaning etc...etc..if nothing helpful shows in the search.

Others have had the same type problems, so you are bound to find something that can assit you...take your time and do it right.

I don't expect you will run into problems like I listed...but I have before on other electronics...and it can ruin your day.

boot in the safe mode, see if issue still occurs (F8 at boot) if it does, then likely there is a problem with the Video Card or the LCD itself, I'm leaning toward the video card.
Try flashing the bios to current and installing the most current video driver, see if anything changes.

Black Screen

Sounds like your graphics adapter isn't working correctly or there's a problem with something in Windows (I'm assuming you're running Windows XP). If so, restart your computer and hit F8 until you get a menu. Select Safe Mode and see if it boots up correctly. If it does, note any error messages you may receive and then shut it down. After shutting it down, let it start up on it's own and see if you get your picture back.

Laptop running Vista gets 'blue screen' and shuts itself down

Cooling is the key to keeping your computer free of these type of issues, the Blue screen of death is famious for microsoft, What is happending is the machine is getting hot and needs a rest from the overnight work it does, Solutions are:

1. fan under cpu needs to be cleaned
2. can buy a fan to put under unit to help airflow
3. Keep room temp 75 F to avoid heat

Make sure you run windows update on a side note.
