Question about Refrigerators

I had a problem with the defrost system.I replaced the heater and thermostat.I turned it back on and the coils froze up right away. Is this normal? The fan has not came on either ,so I'm going to replace it also.

If the fan doesn't work it will freezes up , but most of the cases the problem is with the defrost timer.

The fan should run any time the compressor is on if it is not on it is bad and needs to be replaced. When you take the back cover off make sure both leads are connected to the fan before you condemn it. Then take it out and keep the fan blades as you will use them on the new fan motor.

Coils freeze up and fridge runs all the time till I melt coils.


There might be a few causes

Door Seal might be defective causing the door not to shut tightly this causes air from the room to get into the freezer through the opening and as the air comes in contact with the evaporator coils, it freezes. Normally the defrost system removes the ice but if the seal is defective the coils freeze too quickly and the defrost system cant keep up

If the freezer evaporator coils ice over, the defrost thermostat might be defective. Several times a day the defrost heater turns on for a few minutes to melt away any frost that may have accumulated on the freezer evaporator coils. In order for this to work, the defrost thermostat has to sense that the coils are cold enough. If the coils are cold enough the defrost heater will turn on. If the thermostat is defective it may not be able to sense the temperature of the coils and then won't turn on the defrost heater. If the defrost heater doesn't turn on, the evaporator coils ice over and eventually no air will be able to travel through the coils to provide cooling to the freezer. The defrost thermostat can be checked for continuity. It should have continuity when it reaches the low temperature of its operating range.

My GE Profile freezer door won't open. I defrosted for a couple of days, wiped it down and turned back on, and it froze again.


DEFROST PROBLEM
The evaporator coil behind the cover on the back wall inside the freezer will ice up under normal conditions. Every 8 to 10 hours for around 20 minutes the defrost timer (or in most newer models the electronic adaptive defrost control) will turn the defrost heater on to melt the built up ice. There is a defrost thermostat which prevents the heater from overheating the freezer by breaking the heater circuit when the temp reaches close to 32 degrees F. The entire cooling system shuts off during the defrost cycle and starts back when the timer advances through the cycle.

If this ice is not melted it will continue to build up until the air can't flow over the coil to circulate the cold air through the freezer and into the fridge. The temperature change in the fridge is usually noticed first followed by the freezer.

If the defrost thermostat is bad, it can prevent the heater from coming on OR it won't turn the heater off when it gets too warm. It is clamped to the evaporator coil at the top to sense the temp. If it appears to be misshapen it is bad.
With an ohm meter it should show continuity when cold and none when warm.
You can also bypass(disconnect the two wires plugged into it and twist them together) the thermostat to see if the heater comes on then. If it does then you know the thermostat is bad and needs replaced.

The defrost heater is located on the evaporator. It is in a tube which is at the bottom and can also go up the sides of the evaporator. On some types you can see a burnt spot if it's bad. With an ohm meter it should show continuity from end to end when disconnected from the wiring in the freezer. You can also test the wiring for voltage when it's in the defrost mode.

I have a sub zero side by side. The refrig side is at 40 degrees but a 10 inch by 6 inch piece of ice keeps forming on the left size, back wall. What would be the likely cause of the ice build up??

Their are 2 possible things causing the ice build up

1) the condenser coils is very dusty and must be cleaned,to clean it remove the top grill and the smaller panel behind the grill,use a vacuum to clean all the dust from the coil

2) the evaperator coil in the refrig. behind the back wall has a small refregrant(freon) leak in it and the coil needs to be replaced

I hope thats its due to the upper coil needing to be vacuumed since its something you can do at no cost,but even if it doesnt fix the problem the coil needs to be cleaned to help both the freezer and fresh food section work more efficently
if after cleaning the upper (condenser) coil and turning off the fridge to melt is away ice build up from (evaperator)coil,if the ice ball reoccurs the repair could be as much a $1,000.00 to replace the coil and recharge the refrigerant

My freezer doesn't freeze any more. We have turned the unit off and defrosted it for a week, before plugging it back in. It froze for 2 days and now its not. We have had a tech out to fix this...

Side bt side has solid ice build up on coil in back of freezer compartment..heater element bad or something else?

Ice build-up in lower freezer. We replaces the


warm between doors is normal. if hot then clean coils and if coils clean make sure condenser fan motor working thats the fan in the back compartment, however if warm thats good. did the evaporator coil freeze from top to btm is that why u replaced heater. if it was then could be heater,if the coil is only getting frost on half the coil,you could have a sealed system problem. is the evaporator motor working in the frz side if not,then that could be the problem.if coil is froze up it needs to be defrosted. did you defrost coil when you replaced heater,if not try defrosting coils and then wait about 12 hrs and see how it does.

Make sure the fan near the compressor is running and that the coils next to it are warm. If that's not the poblem
Then Below the evaporator fan is the evaporator coils. Remove the back cover in the freezer to observe the frost pattern. Light frost everywhere(NORMAL) or a partial pattern of ice(LOW ON FREON) or nothing(LOW FREON OR COMPRESSOR PROBLEM). If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air
