If you are talkinh about unhooking the shifting rod from the lower unit, it might be behind a small plat held on with 2 screws on the side of the motor towards the bottom (casing that the lower unit dropped out of) or look uo in the housing , you should see how it is connected, usually a small bolt

How do you turn a 6hp boat motor to a 8hp motor on a Johnson 1993

cheapest way is to buy a bigger power head
you may achieve the desired power by boring and fitting bigger pistons but you will have to have a long talk with a dealer service center technician to see if that would be feasible to do
as the motor is quite long in the tooth, it may be a better to consider a late model or new unit as the advantages of the later technology will be beneficial in the long run

What is the plate behind the carby with fin like things on Johnson 6hp

Sounds like your describing the reed valves. They open on the intake stroke to let the air/fuel mixture into the cylinders.

I have a short shaft Johnson 6hp outboard, the Jon boat I mounted it on is too deep, and motor doesn't reach water. Is there a way to lower motor? A bracket to lower motor to reach water?

outboard motor manufacturers supply a long shaft leg for just this problem
Talk with your Johnson dealer and check used outboards on e bay
Lowering the whole motor may affect the boat and floatation aspects besides making it harder to steer and start

Johnson 6hp model 6R710 need details

Basic check for any outboard: check compression in each cylinder, should all be within 10% of the lowest reading. With an air gap spark tester check spark. Your 6 HP spark should jump a 3/8" gap, blue crisp spark is good, yellow weak. Check gear lube with the motor in a verticle position, prop end down, unscrew the drain plug at the bottom of the gear case. Let a couple of drops out. Should be clean gear oil. If old it might be black and have a strong odor. There should be no water or metal filings. If it is milky there is water mixed in with the oil. If all checks ok run the motor. It should run smooth, no knocking and the cylinder head should be about 120 degrees. That is uncomfortable to keep your finger on but not so hot you cannot touch it. If it is too hot or too cold it can cause problems if run. Too hot will cause problems very soon, too cold will cause problems over time by building up carbon in cylinders and causing piston rings to stick.

Hope this helps.

Remove lower unit from a 1990 120 hp johnson outboard motor

if i remember correctly there is a pin that connects the gear rod below the carbs , remove it ! then remove the 4 bolts on each side of the gear box , then remove the round plate with the small fin on and there is a bolt under it and possibly one just next to it , mite be one bolt at the front on top and then the box should come off ( put in forward gear first and be careful the box doesnt drop as you take the last bolt out ) !!!!!

6hp Johnson outboard stalls & quits

go to an auto parts store and get a can of gasoline additive called seafoam. Read the label so you know how much to add to your 6 gallon tank. This stuff works wonders on outboard motors.
