SOURCE: how to wire 3 switches in a 3 gang box

WARNING: Do not attempt to do this work unless you completely understand the information provided below. If in doubt call an electrician.
Always make sure the power is disconnected from all possible sources before making any connections. Your description of the problem indicates that there may be multiple power wires coming into the same box. In that case local codes may require that the box be partitioned to prevent exposure to voltages up to 220 volts.
You need to determine where each wire goes to know how to connect them together. You cannot rely on color alone. If the power supply runs through the box to the loads then most (but probably not all) of the white wires will be connected together. If the power runs to the load boxes first then none of the white wires in the switch box should be connected together. They are used to run the switched/dimmed power back to the loads (and should be taped to cover the white in the box). In that case each switch has its own power input and they should not be tied together. A wire (could be black or white with black tape) brings power from the load box, gets connected to the input terminal of the switch and the corresponding black wire carries the switched power back to the load. The fan/light switch will have one power in and a switched power out for the fan and another for the light. The 3-way will have one "power" in (or it could be the final power out to the light) and two "carrier wires that connect to the other 3-way switch. If the power supply goes through the switch box then there will be at least 10 wires in that box. In that case see the attached diagram: a5fa64a.gif

SOURCE: I am trying to wire my 3 way cooper switch and

you need 2- 3way switches to work properly, on the one side of the switch there are 2 screw terminals and your "traveler wire pair" are connected here, then on the same switch with only 1 terminal on that side the hot phase hooks to one switch and the other switch has the light and neutral hook to this switch

I need a wiring diagram to wire two way dimmer switched in place of normal switches

Take off the 2 wires from the old switch... put on the 2 wires from the dimmer. the 3rd wire is a ground it is green put it on a ground screw at the back. If your switch has more wires it is likely a 3 way system and needs a 3 way switch instead.

I'm using a Cooper Master Dimmer with a Cooper toggle type 3 way switch circuit controlling one incandescent light fixture. My home is 30 years old and I've found many deviations from acceptable wiring...

The problem is most likely not the dimmer or the wiring, but rather the existing 3-way switch.

First of all, the Aspire smart dimmer does not work in conjunction with traditional, 3-way, on/off toggle switches. When the 3-way switch is in one-position, it lets the dimmer work, but in the other position, it cuts power to the entire lighting circuit - and the smart dimmer is NOT going to be able to override that. You instead need to get the corresponding remote dimmer (sometimes called a slave, or a companion dimmer), and use that to replace the standard 3-way switch.

That may also solve your "mystery turn-on" issue. Even though those dimmers can use the existing 3-way switch wiring, you have to REALLY pay attention to the instruction sheets to see how the master and the slave wire up to each individual electrical box. I vaguely remember that even if you were to use the product in a single-pole application, those two wires that, I assume, you attached to the traveller wires in the house needed to be shorted together in order to work - and since you have them running into a 3-way switch, the errors that you're seeing are bound to happen.

Long story short, get the slave dimmer, install it according to the instructions, and all these problems should go away.

Can not connect new dimmer.

I think you are removing a 3-way dimmer. Is there another on-off switch that also turns the dimmed light on and off? You will need to replace it with another 3-way dimmer. Here is a link to an excellent how-to write-up.

Problem w/new sliding dimmer

The problem is that the Cooper #9530DS-K-L is actually a 3-way switch and you need a single pole dimmer switch to replace your existing single pole toggle switch.

If you want to use the Cooper switch you have you can take one of the black wires and cap it with a wire nut and connect the other two wires, but frankly, you'd be paying about 2 times the price for a 3-way dimmer switch when you only need a single pole switch.

You should be able to return the switch and get the correct one.

You should only have (2) black wires on the proper replacement switch, plus a ground wire

Hope you found this very helpful and best regards!
