It seems as though the speakers wire connector may have become loose or disconnected. You will have to remove the switch cover above the Keyboard to check. Here is the typical instructions for removing it:

Before you begin any removal or installation procedures:

1. Shut down the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
2. Disconnect all external devices connected to the computer.
3. Disconnect the power cord.
4. Remove the battery by following these steps:
a. Turn the computer upside down with the front panel
toward you.

Close the computer.
3. Turn the computer upside down with the front panel
toward you.
4. Remove the three Phillips PM2.5×5.0 screws that secure
the switch cover to the computer.
5. Turn the computer display-side up with the front toward you.
6. Open the computer as far as possible.
7. Lift the rear edge of the switch cover and swing it forward
until it rests on the keyboard.
8. Release the zero insertion force (ZIF) connector 1 to which
the LED board cable is connected and disconnect the cable 2
from the LED board.
9. Remove the switch cover.

Remove the Keyboard:
Remove the four Phillips PM2.5×7.0 screws that secure the keyboard to the computer.
Turn the computer display-side up with the front panel
toward you.
5. Open the computer as far as possible.
6. Lift the rear edge of the keyboard 1 until it rests at an angle.
7. Slide the keyboard 2 back to disengage the tabs on the front
edge of the keyboard from the top cover.
8. Swing the keyboard 3 forward until it rests on the palm rest.

Release the ZIF connector 1 to which the keyboard cable is connected and disconnect the keyboard cable 2 from the system board.
10. Remove the keyboard.

Remove the Speaker Assembly:

Disconnect the speaker assembly cable 1 from the power button board.
5. Remove the two Phillips PM2.5×4.0 screws 2 that secure the speaker assembly to the computer.
6. Remove the speaker assembly 3.

Reverse directions to replace everything.

SOURCE: No Power (LED off) in the Altec Lansing VS4121

There is a fuse on the power supply board which is held in place with 4 screws. Yiu will have to unplug the sub-woofer connector to remove it.

Sub Speaker giving intermittent loud crackling and sharp loud popping sounds even with main volume control turned off. Crackling sound can be reduced by turning sub volume control off.

It may be the control itself too. In time, these controls can get dust build up inside it. There are volume control spray cleaners available from Radio Shack or other electronic parts stores. The cheat on cleaning the control is to just rotate it from stop to stop as many times as it takes to clear the noise.

Why does it emit a loud whistle when turned on?

I got rid of my Altec Lansing because I got white noise when the unit was turned OFF. They are not a good make. You can try moving any wires or magnetic influence away from them. I now own Bowers and Wilkins MM1 speakers which are amazing.

Sounds like a problem in the speakers' internal power supply, maybe a faulty capacitor. Speakers need to be looked at by a technician, or replaced with a new set.

Speakers Died?

No, I think you've fried only the fuse of Altec Lansing. Check at the back of the main unit (subwoofer) if there's a fuse box (should look like head of the plastic bolt). If not than turn it off, unplug it and open op the main unit and check for the fuse. It should look like this:0a68355.jpg

If the metal wire inside of it is broken than you should buy new fuse of same amperage (it should be engraved on metal part of the fuse or printed on glass tube).

Crackling Sound From Subwoofer

Check any wiring coming or going to the subwoofer. It sounds like it could be a loose connection.  Is there a LFE or bass boost knob on your subwoofer? Does turning that up/down cause the crackling (if it exists). If so, you could use some tuner cleaner to clean the contacts on the potentiometer knob.

If the crackling is on the subwoofer only, it might be damaged from bottoming out.  See if you can remove the baffle or grille covering the woofer and inspect for visual problems. You can also try to lighly push in and out on the subwoofer to hear if it makes any scraping sounds. If so, it is definitely damaged and the driver will have to be replaced.
