Question about Maytag Neptune FAV6800AW Top Load Washer

1 Answer

Will not spin, therefore will not drain

Cycle always stops at the same place, such as 36 minutes to go in Delicate mode. Stops with water in basket.

Can siphon water through the hose OK, and did get it to pump out in Quick cycle mode. In some service modes, I can feel the pump vibrate when pumping dry..

When set to Spin Only, displays 12 minutes and Max Extract, then no further action.

Ran the Quick Spin Test, and unit seemed to keep cycling through the same point, up to 48 (or 480?) RPM for a few seconds that stopping, only to repeat.

    Rich,
Thanks. We're on to more specific symptoms.

First time I tried to turn the basket CCW it would not budge. Then tried it with no power (duh!) and again with the Spin Only cycle selected.

It then did move and since rotates freely CCW, will not rotate CW, and the tumblers don't spin.

Now - this is new - it makes a serious mechanical interference noise like a rotating broken part, about 3X per washer basket revolution. I am assuming this is progress.

Hey Joe,
Let’s check to see if the wash basket will rotate CCW in Spin Only Cycle with no clothes in the wash basket
1. Open the lid and rotate the wash basket by hand Counter Clockwise, CCW. The wash basket should rotate freely with no restriction. The wash basket will not rotate Clockwise, CW by hand.

2. Raise the top of the machine. Insert a flat blade putty knife approximately 2.5” from the left and right sides of the washer top, depress the spring tabs securing machine top to the washer base. Raise the top of the machine to observe the wash basket and tumbler action described in step 3. (See page 33 of the Service Manual for putty knife insertion point).

3. With the top raised start a Spin Only cycle with no clothes in the wash basket, observe the wash basket it should begin to rotate CCW does it?. Watch the tumblers, they should not rotate in spin cycle (maybe ½ turn at the start of spin cycle and that’s all). If the tumblers rotate while the wash basket is rotating you have a clutch malfunction. If the basket does spin CCW and the tumblers are rotating then you have a broken clutch spring. Let do those checks and observations and see what the next troubleshooting steps will be. Rich

    Joe got the comment OK

From what you described I feel you have clutch issues. I believe that is where the mechanical noise is coming from. I believe your machine will use an upper roller clutch bearing as well as the lower roller clutch bearing in the clutch hub, Did you read thru this post. ? Sorry the pic’s don’t display I feel your wash basket binding is similar to this forum members issue. With no power applied and the roller clutches not frozen up you should be able to rotate the wash basket CCW with your pinky finger the wash basket will not rotate CW. Sounds like yours broke loose with power up. Do you want to dive in and try to fix? Here is what is involved to pull the clutch out of your machine. Also read the last couple of post in this forum. If you call a repair service in you are looking at $300 +. If you can DIY the repair cost could be from $10 dollars if you just need a roller clutch bearing clean up and re-lube to $50 -140 for a replacement clutch. I’m cheap and would go for the $50 clutch. I think you will need to replace the clutch assembly; they don’t sell just the roller clutch bearings.

What is the serial number of your machine? Just need the first two digits i.e. 10, 12, 14, 16. This info is located on the top right back side of the console.

If you have some basic mechanical skill sets you can do it, here is the process

Disconnect 120VAC power cord. Read and follow all safety warnings in the Service Manual
    The
Service Manual for reference. Sears Parts Direct for reference.
Raise the top of the machine. Insert a flat blade putty knife approximately 2.5” from the left and right sides of the washer top, depress the spring tabs securing machine top to the washer base. See page 33 of the SM for putty knife insertion point.

Remove the front panel see page 41.
    Tools required;
3/8 inch socket and socket wrench to remove clutch pulley bolt. Page 47 of the SM
1/2 inch socket or wrench to loosen Drive Motor tension bolt.
5/16 nut driver or 5/16 ¼ socket on an extension to remove front panel see page 41 of the Service Manual.
    1. Lean the washer back and blocked up in that position against a wall for a better reach angle. Rotate 3/8” clutch Pulley Bolt CW to remove clutch bolt.
    2. Follow SM page 46 & 47 to remove clutch pulley.
    3. Remove 4 screws holding plastic cover on clutch, inspect clutch spring to make sure it is not broken. If either clutch spring retaining ends are broken off then the clutch must be replaced. Inspect Roller Clutch bearings and clean up with WD-40 and re-lube with light bearing grease. Most machine series use an Upper Roller Clutch bearing and always a lower clutch pulley Roller Clutch bearing. My series 16 machine doesn’t use the Upper Roller Clutch one way bearing. These bearings are one way rotation bearings in the Clockwise direction. Make sure the Spinner Shaft Coupler will rotate freely in the CW direction in both Roller Clutch bearings. If the Roller Clutch bearings or Spinner Shaft Coupler will not clean up with WD-40 I recommend a clutch replacement.
    4. Replace white bearing plate into clutch pulley hub, insure key slot slips into clutch Spring pin in the clutch hub.
    5. Replace Clutch plastic cover with 4 screws.
    6. Reinstalling the Clutch Pulley assembly is the most difficult part of the process. With a tight work area try a test fitment of seating (if used) the Upper Roller Clutch bearing with the notches into the bottom of the wash tub. Then insert the Spinner Shaft Coupler into that bearing rotating CW to reseat the coupler notches to the spinner shaft. Then the clutch pulley to the squared end agitator shaft. Rock back and forth the clutch pulley assembly with upward lifting pressure to reseat the clutch assembly. When the clutch assembly is properly seated you will feel a 1/16-1/8" gap between the Pulley face and shaft end as mentioned and shown on page 47 of the SM. On reinstallation, tighten Clutch Pulley bolt CCW to 96” pounds 8’ foot pounds (Snug no torque wrench required).
    7. Do a quick wash and make sure clutch runs true with no wobble or clicking sound. If the clutch has not been seated properly it will spin off. If this happens go to page 16 of the SM Board Output Test and turn on Drain Pump in Service Mode to pump out excess water.
    8. Repeat steps 6&7 if the clutch has excessive noise or spins off.

The lights that are blinking are indicating an error code--the particular code you describe is a "heater error". You will have to check the circuit for an open heater element, loose or broken wire, defective main control board. The part number for the main board is DE92-02256C. Hope I helped you!

Washing machine stopped and says "sud". What does that mean?

SUDS DETECTION

During Drain Routine

During the Drain Routine, the water level is checked continuously. Normal drain will occur until the

pressure switch senses no water in the wash tub and there is no foam (suds). The drain pump will

operate an additional 15 seconds after the pressure switch reports no water or foam.

If the drain routine operates for four (4) minutes and the pressure switch senses any foam (suds) in

the wash tub, the Central Control Unit will start the "Kill-Foam" Routine. (See description of this

Routine below.) After the Kill-foam Routine is concluded, the Drain Routine will restart. If, after

four (4) minutes the pressure switch still senses foam in the wash tub, the Central Control Unit will

go into Failure Mode. The digital display will show, F02.

During Spin (Extract) Routine

During the Spin/Extract Routine the water level is checked continuously. If, during this routine, the

pressure switch senses the presence of foam (suds) in the wash tub, the Central Control Unit will

stop the drive motor and the basket will stop spinning. The electronic control will count the number

of spin repetitions that are attempted due to foam (suds). There are a maximum of three (3)

attempts for each Spin/Extract Routine.

Kill-Foam Routine

1. The Remaining Time counter is stopped.

2. The digital display shows Sud.

3. The Drain Pump is turned OFF.

4. The Central Control Unit will fill the wash tub with 1 gal. (4 L) of cold water.

5. While the tub is filling the basket will tumble 1 sec. ON/15 Sec. OFF.

6. Once the tub is filled, the drive motor will turn OFF and the basket will rest without any

movement for five (5) minutes.

7. After the five (5) minute rest, the remaining time counter will restart and the digital display

will show the remaining time left in the routine.

NOTE: If the Kill-Foam routine was initiated during a Spin/Extract Routine, the tumbling action

will be reduced to a cycle of 3 sec. ON/13 sec. OFF. If, at the end of either the Drain or Spin/

Extract Routines, a suds condition still remains, the digital display will show Sud.

Sud will also be displayed for a short period at the end of a cycle, if a Suds condition was

detected during the cycle. This will alert the consumer to reduce the amount of detergent in
subsequent uses.

Maytag Neptune TL starts, fills with water a few sec then clicks loudly a few times and then stops, a few sec later it repeats this, then stops for good. Tried unplugging and restarting, but same thing...

Any error codes?
Do you want to troubleshoot? If so here is the Service Manual.
FAV6800A/FAV9800A Service Manual for reference. Sears Parts Direct for reference.

I would start by removing the front cover of the machine follow all safety warnings in the Service Manual.

Follow the first few steps in my Clutch Fix post to remove the front cover.

Then let me know if during the water fill cycle the machine rotates the wash basket CCW in a slow spin during the water fill cycle before the machine stops and we will go from there. Give me all the detail you see with the front cover off I need to know if the wash basket is rotating CCW during the washer fill cycle.

You can lift the washer top up a slight amount to observe the slow CCW spin of the wash basket. I’m checking that the outer tub bearings are not seized……Rich
To pump out the excess tub water with this process;

Enter Service Mode by simultaneously pressing and holding the Enviro Plus and Spin Only keys for three seconds or the display reads “00”

Pressing the Delicates key will lock the lid. Now press the Presoak key the drain pump will turn on. Stop with off button or hit the Presoak key.

This process is documented in the Service Manual. I would go to page 16 of the SM lower right hand part of page, Board Output Test and turn on the drain pump in service mode to pump out the tub.

Maytag Neptune TL clothes still dripping wet after full cycle

Pump out time of 40 seconds sounds good.

No ND error code and you spin up to 850RPM which is max for the machine.

You have no standing water in the wash basket.... I'm scratching my head.

Could you do a Spin Only cycle with that same wet wash load and set the SPIN for Max Extract. After you start the Spin Only cycle put the machine in Service Mode and watch the RPM range. This cycle sets the display to 12 minutes. Let’s see if the wash load remains wet and what max RPM is reached.

""Maybe the pump is not turning on during the spin cycle?"" You have no standing water in the wash basket correct? I feel the pump is turning on or you would have standing water in the wash basket and the pressure switch would have never indicated an empty condition (Low Level pressure switch contacts) to the Control Board. The Control Board would have stopped the wash cycle with a ND for no drain error code.

The pump in the spin cycle will turn on a number of times see if you hear turn on in a Spin Only cycle

I just ran a Spin Only light wash load with about 5 gallons of water in the wash basket. Timer went to 12 min. I toggled into Service Mode to watch wash basket RPM. At about the 5 Min mark (toggle in and out of Service Mode) the wash basket reached 850RPM then a few minutes later it stepped down to 830RPM to end of Spin Only Cycle. You don’t have a water valve stuck open or you would flood/over flow of the machine. Did you here the drain pump turn on several times during the Spin Only cycle?
