Question about Whirlpool AD50USS Dehumidifier

How do you check refrigerant in model ad50uss?. The fan is working and I think the compressor is coming on, but after a little while of running the coils do not get cold. Thanks

Turn the unit on and put you hand on the copressor to see
if it's vibrating. If so then it could be low refrigerant or a worn
compressor.
If it's not vibrating then I would check the thermostat,
compressor relay, and compressor for continuity.

The unit is not drawing water from the air

Mary,
There is a recall on Whirlpool dehumidifiers that may cover your unit, the website lists serial numbers of units on the recall list.
Dehumidifier Recall FAQs
I assume from your question that at least the fan is running. There are many reasons why a dehumidifier is not removing water from the air. Most likely is accumulation of dust and pet hair that restricts the air flow. If you can, unplug it, take off the covers and vacuum out all the dirt from the evaporator and condenser (little radiator like parts). This website has some good blow up pictures of how it is put together and part nomenclature:

If the air flow is restricted, the compressor has to work harder to the point that the overload gets tripped. It may or may not be resettable; it is part #10 in the diagram on this page:

If you do take the covers off, check that the fan turns freely and you may want to add a drop of oil to each end of the motor if there is a place to oil it. Light oil like sewing machine oil or light engine oil will do.
You cannot really tell if the compressor is working with all of the covers on; and I cannot recommend plugging it in with covers removed because there may be open electrical connections that you do not want to touch. However if the compressor is running, the outlet tube will get hot; that is the one that goes to the condenser [radiator like bundle of tubes nearest the fan] [it may get too hot to touch]. The evaporator [bundle of tubes farthest from the fan] should start to get cold where the tiny little tube from the condenser joins. If neither is happening and you are sure the compressor is running, it is out of refrigerant [freon] and may or may not be worth fixing. If the evaporator ices up [gets covered with frost] it may be low on refrigerant indicating a leak; again it may not be worth fixing.

Ad50uss is not producing water. Fan and compressor is running . Coils are not getting cold, is refrigerant low? Or could it have a leak? How do u check for refrigerant leak and how do u add refrigerant and...

Compressors have 3 or 5 tubes coming out of the can. Probably 3 in this case. The largest is the suction and the smaller one is the hot gas line. The 3rd is crimped and brazed over. The suction line should be cool or cold (no frost or ice) and the small one should be hot. Be careful of fans. Also, that small line is normally hot enough to burn you. If they are the same temperature, its either low or out of refrigerant (Very common), the liquid line could be plugged (Rare), or the compressor is not pumping (also rare). From here on, you need a compound refrigeration gauge and a line tap. An amp probe would be nice but not needed at this point. If you have an amp probe and the compressor is running and not pumping, the amps will be lower than the name plate RLA or FLA by quite a bit. The name plate should tell you what type of refrigerant it takes. 134A is the new standard but it could be different (R12). Knowing the right type is a must. I have seen compound gauges, line taps, and R134A in hardware stores but you can't add any refrgerant on less your sure no air has gotten in. If the pressure in the suction line matches up close to the ambient temperature when the compressor is off, it has refrigerant. With the gauge on the suction line, start the compressor. If the gauge drops into a vacuum of 25 inches or more, the compressor is probably OK but the refrigerant is gone. If the leak is on the suction side, there will be air in the system. The moisture in the air will freeze immediately at the metering device and it wont get cold. If it all leaked out its another whole process to find and repair the leak, evacuate the system and weigh in the proper charge. I hope this helps. There is a whole process for all of this. Let me know if you have the equipment. I'll get you through.

The humidifier runs but there is never any water in the bucket. The basement is having a musky smell so I know the humidity is high. What can I do?

If this is a refrigerant based humidifier with a compressor in it, you may be low on refrigerant or have a refrigerant leak.

Wont run at all, could it be a bad capcitator?

could be but check the power circuit first. power from the cord through the on-off switch, then a thermostat, then a humidistat, any overloads and then the compressor. check the path for the fan unit. dry bearings, frozen rotor etc.

Runs good but doesn't take any moisture out of the air

it is not running correctly if the refig circuit is not freezing the water out of the air. Check for compressor operation

How to fix dehumidifier condenser won't start

That's your compressor. (the condenser is the tubing just after the compressor) First, make sure you are not using an extention cord, or if you do, make sure it is a heavy enough cord. Low voltage can cause your problem, do to a light extention cord use. Second, you may have a bad relay. (inside the box on the side of the compressor) Third, your compressor may be bad. They can be direct tested with a compressor test cord by a service tech that knows what they are doing. Bad compressor = get a new dehumidifier (too expensive to replace).

PLEASE HELP

Make sure the coils are clean. (check the inside part of the coils. If they look ok then see if your compressor is running. if its not running then it could be any number of things. I recommend that you have a pro look at it
