Old Kenmore 158. bobbin issues, thread clumping and such

It has a lot of trouble picking up the bobbin thread and when it does it goes fine for a few stitches before getting bogged down in a wad of bobbin thread on the down side of the garment!

It was doing that before, stitching for a few inches and then the bobbin thread wads up under the fabric. Now it just does it from the git-go and there's no sewing happening at all, just thread wasting. I have tried adjusting the top tension. The bobbin tension seems fine so I didn't mess with that. The result is always the same. The thread wad gets all tangled up in the machine and the sewing machine stops after a few stitches. Seems like this should be easy to fix, but I can't figure it out.

Problem is always on the opposite side of the fabric, in your case the machine is not threaded properly.

How to thread a bobbin, sears Kenmore model 158.17031

Place both the bobbin case and the bobbin on the table in front of you. Have the open side of the bobbin case facing up and the bobbin with the thread of the bobbin unwinding clockwise. Drop the bobbin in the bobbin case. Pull the thread tail up through the notch in the bobbin case and then to the left under the thin metal plate until the thread appears to be coming out through the hole in the side of the bobbin case. (When you pull the bobbin thread, the bobbin should turn clockwise in the bobbin case.)

You can try a couple of YouTube videos:

Loading thread on the bobbin old Kenmore sewing machine
(do not wind the bobbin as fast as he does as it tends to stretch the thread and also could cause the spool to fly off the machine!)

How to adjust timing on 1970's kenmore sewing machine

This sounds less like timing, and more like a threading issue.
Make sure the thread is properly in the tension disks in the top of your machine.

Thread is clumping underneath

Unfortunately, the machine's timing may have been adversely affected during the jam and removal of the fabric. Here's something that may resolve the issue if it is not timing-related:

Install a brand new needle.
Remove all the thread from the machine.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading the top thread!
Rethread from the beginning and verify the thread path is correct.
If you have a smoothly-wound bobbin, try that. (A bobbin that you describe will contribute to sewing issues.)
Install and thread the bobbin--confirm the bobbin is spinning the right direction in the bobbin case.
Re-test your machine.

If you are having issues with the bobbin not winding smoothly, there are standalone bobbin winders for about $30 on the market (local JoAnn's or on the internet) called Sidewinder. Confirm that your machine bobbins will work (there are a few machines that won't, I think Singer). This is a very good accessory to have since you can wind bobbins without having to unthread the machine and also saves wear & tear on your machine.

I have a Kenmore Ultrastitch 12 model 158. 1595280 old hand me down. I love it. It has served me well. However, the bobbin thread starts off well then gets so tight that it pulls the spool thread in huge...

Sounds like it will need a tune up/adjustment and a professional cleaning/oiling. It is an older machine and it would be worth it to you to invest in it. The old war horses, are the best ones to put the money into because they do not make them like that anymore. Just be fussy who you have fix it, check them out.

Can't put thread on bobbin

I cannot tell what your problem is. The winder isn't working? The bobbin won't hold the thread so it will fill?

There are threading guides at the sewusa website that may be helpful as they include written instructions along with graphics.

Frister Star bobbin/threading problem

First of all make sure you have the needle in the correct way round, when you thread the machine make sure the presser foot is up so the thread goes between the tension discs, top tension about 4 or 5, make sure you can pull the bobbin thread through with slight resistence and the bobbin should turn anti clockwise in the bobbin case as you look at the open part.

Bottom thread of sewing machine jams up

Try turning the bobbin around. Some bobbins should turn clockwise, some counter clockwise. What you described is what my Kenmore and Brother machines do when the bobbin is in incorrectly.
