Question about Haier L42B1180 - 42 1080p LCD HDTV
It will depend on the laptop's available external video ports. You can connect a VGA cable from some laptops to the VGA port on the TV. Then plug in a 3.5 mm audio cable from the headphone jack to the PC audio in port. (The audio connection is optional. You could continue using the laptop's speakers.)
Make the connections with the TV and the laptop off. You may need to enter the BIOS to enable the external video port. (It can be turned off to save power. The BIOS is accessed on boot by pressing a key (Esc, F1, Del) noted on the splash screen. For Win8 machines, you'll need to do a special restart.) Then turn on the TV before turning on the computer. The TV monitor should be automatically recognized for resolution and refresh rate. Next, if you have a Windows system, right click on the desktop (pick a spot with no icons or running programs). Click on Screen Resolution (or perhaps Graphics Properties, depending on the OS). Set the monitor to duplicate the screens or send data only to the TV screen.
I'm not sure if the HDMI ports will understand a computer signal. (Not all TVs can interpret the computer's HDMI signal; it is different than that of other set top boxes.) You can try the following connections.
If your laptop has a DVI output, use a DVI to HDMI cable (or adapter) to connect to the TV. Then connect the HDMI cable to HDMI 1 and use the PC audio connection as above.
For an HDMI output, use an HDMI cable. (You will still need the audio cable unless you can reset the audio signal to output on the HDMI port. Go to the Control Panel and then the Hardware and Sounds section. Under Sound, select Manage audio devices. Then in the Playback tab, make the HDMI audio the default.) For Display Port or Thunderbolt outputs on the laptop, you will need a DP to HDMI adapter.
If the HDMI port doesn't understand the computer signal, you'll need to use a converter to go from the computer's output to component video or to VGA. Then connect the converter's output to the appropriate port on the TV.
I hope this helps.
(To access the Control Panel in Windows 7 and earlier versions, click Start and then find the Control Panel in the right hand column. For Windows 8, press the Windows key + X (or access the Charms menu on the right-hand side (Win+C) and choose Settings). Then select the Control Panel.)
