Question about Garden

1950's boat with chevy 6 cyl duel carbs (Rochester BC) w/auto choke on primary carb. will only start when fully choked (hot or cold). had to adjust choke to approx. 3/4 closed when hot runs ok but burns a ton of fuel. any suggestions? please.

I am sorry to say this, but the compression for that type of engine should be atleast 120 psi. Remove the muffler and look at the cylinder, it is scarred beyond repair.

check to make sure your kill switch is not shorting and you have the right gap from the coil to the flywheel also if the flywheel sheer pin is damaged in the least this will cause a multitude of problems... it is the timing pin and must be in good shape not damaged or sheered ..any way reply to mrdmburns@cableone.net and i will try to help you through this.... I had the same problem. I took it to the dumpster and used my old echo that I purchased in 1986. The Homelite was 2 years old. My sugesstion is to dump it.

need to adjust the high sscrew. i do mine in 1/4 turns. start machine, full throttle, adjust the h(high) til it clears up.i would start by turning 1/4 counterclock wise, just remember to keep track, in case it runs worse, the put it back to orig. then try the other way. but i suggest 1/4 turn at a time

example... think of a clock when turning screw. straight up and down, 12oc, 1/4 turn will be 3oc, another 1/4 will be 6oc, and so on. hope it helps!

To the intake manifold , from your choke, choke close incoming air is restricted, adjustment of the choke via thermostatic spring coil or electric heating element, loosen the 3 screws , as spring heats up the choke gradually opens, hope this helps

Choke dont work


if too rich adjust choke leaner
if too lean, adjust choke righer.

from 1920 to about 1988 , usa, 70 years we did this.
no more. well we do, but most dont now.
i still have 1 twin carb motor cycle and one single carb VW 1968.
both restored.
also the chock heater must work and the choke spring not old.
the old bi-metal spring that is old become lazy,/crazy. kick it to the curb for best experiences.
if water heated choke the water actually must flow here.
if not, it will fail.
there are 3 common types.
electric, needs 12v.
water, needs 180F hot water actual flow.
and exhaust choke stove heater. (a small horror this, dont ask)
there are others, but would need carb name and p/n

Edelbrock 1406 3 years old on a Chevy 350 corvette. Starts and runs great when cold but when it heats up to running temp. and I shut off the engine it will not start!! Has great spark,compression,and fuel....


Check the choke and make sure that the choke is all the way open when hot. The choke should only be closed when cold. The choke can be adjusted on the side by loosening the 3 screws and wathcing the butterfly valve.

It sounds like your choke is not being used. If you are setting the choke, the carb is venting air somewhere. Take the cover off the motor and look at what is happening to the choke plate when you set the choke.

The choke plate should have either a vent on the butterfly plate if it closes tight or the butterfly plate should be ajar about the thickness of a credit card if the plate is unvented. Then check the mounting nuts on the carb base for tightness. If you want, you can put some ATV around the outside base of the carb to ensure its sealing.

Also note if there is a stepup cam for the choke RPM. This would increase the RPM with adjustment for cold starts and reduce the need to Throttle so much to cold start the engine. If it does not have this part thats Okay too, just a feature to be used if it is there.

Most likely your low speed idle mixture needs adjusting and its common to have the throttle capable of shutting off the engine without a killswitch. But try Cold starting it and see if sealing the carb base and adjusting the butterfly plate has helped. Then do the mixture adjustment if you are not happy with it.

If all this fails to help, have the engine running and try moving the throttle shaft with your fingers. You want to see if the throttle shaft has play where it pivots in the carb body. Its hard to explain but the extra venting of air can occur where the shaft rubs the casting. Depending on your talent it means you need a new carb or you need to rebuild the shaft.

New honda hrr auto choke hard to start


sounds like it may need the carb clening out, but it could be the auto choke not closing when cold. there was an issue with some of the early auto chokes on the gcv135/160 engines so check to see if the choke flap is in the closed position when starting from cold, run the engine for approx 10-15 minutes and see if the choke flap has opened fully.leave it to go cold and see if the choke flap has returned to the closed position

Check the choke when cold. When its hot take notice that its opened. Upon starting next time when its cold look at the choke and see if its closed fully. It should be. If not push the throttle all the way open and let it retract closed. The choke should close when the engine is cold. If it does not the vacuum break is shot which should be the rear one that controls the choke. Yours may be on the front since some are but very few are made on the front

I have a 1986 pup 4 cyl,4speed.I cant seem to keep the electric choke adjusted correrctly.Is it possible tha there are problems elswere in the carb?or just the choke.
