The pilot light of the hot water does not stay lit. Furnace exhaust and hot water tank is common exhaust. How would this effect the problem

Double vent...??

It really won't make any difference.

Your thermo-couple is your trouble.

Every hardware store.... has them (spare: BUY 2).

Take your old one out... for (length) sizing purposes.

They uswually PULL out of the pilot end...

DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN when re-installing!!!

Did pilot light work correctly for a while? If so how long?
Where is water heater located? Hot attic? Closet? Garage? Is area dirty and dusty? Has air intake been cleaned?
What color is pilot flame? Clear blue or yellow-or-orange?
Have you inspected inside of combustion chamber for dripping water?

I have an old whirlpool gas water heater and the pilot will not stay lit.

Suspects include bad thermocouple, thermocouple slipped down and not in pilot flame, dirty combustion parts and pilot tube, dirty air intake, backdraft caused by other vent fans pulling air down water heater vent, water dripping down vent because of poor venting, air in gas line, low gas pressure, bad gas control valve, hot attic environment, tight house not allowing enough air:

Will not light pilot light. Why?

did you bleed the gas line?
you must loosen the connection at the water heater until you smell gas coming out, then tighten. wait at least 5 minutes before attempting to light. this will give time for the gas to dissipate
if it still wont light... are the connections to the thermocouple tight? if that is tight, might be a bad thermocouple, you will need to replace it.

sounds like you need to replace the thermal coupling. This component sends a signal to the gas valve that there is a pilot
