Question about Buffalo Tools Sportsman GEN7000LP Portable Propane Generator W/Electric Start

My portable generator runs great but only produces 7 volts and 20 volts on each 110 volt receptacle and 20 volts on the 220 volt receptacle. any ideas on troubleshooting steps to find the problem part?

Assuming the speed is correct check the voltage on the rotor brushes during running (Caution) It should be DC. If you have low or no DC voltage then the capacitor in the end of the generator housing is bad, or the AVR. If you do have voltage then make sure the slip rings are clean and shiny, from there you may have a rotor or stator issue that needs carefull resisitance check

Both sets of the 120? If both of those are there (all 4 outlets), then the machine is producing 220v. So get a flashlight and look into the holes on the 220 receptacle, or check the wires on the backside of the receptacle. All that 220 is, is two 120 volts out of phase.

Hi, I recently purchased a used makita 6100r generator and when checking it out I discovered on my 30 amp 220 receptacles arent getting full power. I took out the receptacle and checked the wires in back...


You may be asking too much of the unit; the 5800 watts a which it is spec'd, may be a 'peak' power rating which may be 15-20% higher than its continuous rating. 30 Amps at 220 volts implies 6600 watts which is higher than even the peak power rating. I would expect the unit to produce ~4800 watts continuous or around 22 Amps.
Decided to check my statements and found this, which I quote:

The generator produce onely 73 volts ac on the 120 volts plug and 146 volts ac on the 220 volts plug . what could be causing this problem


Check all wiring and fuses associated with you voltage regulator if they check ok, find a way to adjust your voltage regulator replace it. Make sure the unit is running at 3600 rpm as well and making 60 hz.

You do not want to convert anything to a 220 v connection !!!! Your RV is 12 volt DC and 120 volt AC.
Use a 30amp female to 15 amp male adapter to plug in to regular household receptacle on generator. Available at hardware store and RV stores.

Hello, I would not advise you to adjust the speed without a frequency meter. for 220 volt operation, you will have to use the twist - lock receptacles and not use the neutral in the receptacle. This means one of the generator's hot leads is going to be the neutral in your system. The frame of the generator may be connected to the neutral of the generator, so be careful so that you do not receive an electrical shock. The voltage is adjusted within the receptacle box. There might be a small hole on the right side of the receptacle box that you can insert a small blade screwdriver into to make the voltage adjustment. You do not need to change this much to change the voltage. Now, the frequency is adjusted by a self-locking nut located under the air cleaner right side, when facing the engine. There is a spring on this nut / bolt assembly. I think it is a 5/16 nutdriver or socket that you need for this. Turn counter clockwise 1/8 of a turn. This will slow down the generator to about 50 - 55 hz. This is okay if you are running at around 52 hz. As the generator loads, the rpm will drop down. A frequency meter would be great to use here, as a too low rpm could burn out electrical motors and other equipment that you are using. Coleman powermate 4000 pops circuit breaker on the 220 side.


Don't know what you mean by "on the 220 side".

The generator has two joined circuit breakers that each are 110 volts. Between the two is 220.

If just one of those is opening WITH NOTHING PLUGGED IN, then there are only a few explanations.

1. There is a short in the wiring or the wiring has been tampered with and connected incorrectely.

2. The switch that switches the mode from 120 to 240 has gone bad, possibly with a welded contact. This would occur if the switch is changed with load on the generator. This could put a driect short on half the generator winding and cause one of the breakers to blow.

3. Worst is a winding short in the generator. Fortunately this is the least likely.

4. The 220 receptacle has been broken and insulation failed shorting one terminal to another.

Runs great but will not produce electricity


To flash the excitor circuit on a coleman ( the generator is built by generac) you need a 12 volt battery. You quickly apply 12 volts via your 120vac recepticals. NO MORE THAN ONE OR TWO SECONDS! Then check you ac voltage. Most of the time the brushes are burnt up when voltage is low. Check the brushes first. You can access them by taking the end cap off of the generator via two to four screws. The brush holder is easy to spot, two wires leading to the front of the amature. Hope this solves your problem.

Generator plugs doesn't match cord


Hey steve. do you really need 240 volts for 120 v. circuits. the reason you have to have an adaptor plug is because on your 220 volt plug in , 2 of tthose prongs are hot and 1 is ground. for safety you need to get a plug adapter ( a regular 120 volt plug end ) run a ground from adapter to ground on 220 adapter. same with nuetral. you also need to ground your generator. there is usaully a ground lug on the bottom of the gen. Another way. if you dont really need 220 v. is to use both 120v. recepticals on gen. Run 2 chords to tranf. switch. and hard wire it in to switch. another way i did mine . when i lost power in this hurricane. i ran two # 10 chords from my 2 120v. recept on my gen to my breaker panel. when you do this you have to pull the service meter, if you dont when power comes back on it would backfeed through your gen.then i turn all my 220v. breakers i was able to run lights ,ciling fans, freezer, ice box,washing machine and gas dryer , tv's computors etc. . but to do this, you probably need someone that knows what they are doin.

Dryers require a 40A circuit breaker to handle the current. According to Ohms Law: Watts = Volts * Amps. Therefore, you require a power capacity of 220V * 40A in order to safely run the dryer, which is 8800 Watts. This means your generator does not have enough capacity to run the dryer. If we consider the full power of your generator at 6500 Watts, this only allows for 29.5A, which is not enough to run your dryer.

If it WAS possible, you would need to ensure that you ran a 30A heavy extension cord with the correct 220V plugs and receptacles on the end. This would require at least 10gauge 3-conductor wire, which is quite expensive.

However, that point is moot, since your generator does not have the capacity to run your dryer. You could try it, but I rather suspect that the dryer will trip the 30A breaker on the genset circuit. If you do try it, make sure you run a 10-gauge, 30A extension cord or you could have a fire.
