Whats the problem? Make sure you have rebuilt your watervalve(gets done every 3-5 years) if it doesnt get done, the unit will probably not light, or light intermittently, and you'll have wild temperature fluctuations

Year model by serial number

So.........it's a GSW 50 gallon which you either bought in Canada or smuggled in.
Even if you have a model with a shutter damper without a fan this is NOT a Power Venter and will need standard through roof flue pipe/chimney to establish draft and vent CO and exhaust gases atmospherically AKA Natural Draft. It will NOT vent sidewall without a fan induced draft

Pull the thermostat loose from the wall so you can see the model number located on the back of device.
Google search model: xxxxcy .pdf
Or search for british gas thermostat .pdf
This will give you access to product manual.
Also check batteries located on back of unit. Install fresh batteries. Memories should be retained on the chip during battery change.
Add a comment with model number, and I will try to locate thermostat manual.

Richmond 5v40-36f

1) My search does not show that product exists, or existed before the internet.
Maybe that product only exists on fixya.
Or the water heater is older model number from Rheem., aka Richmond, Ruud etc.
Or fixya picked up a model number from a question, and the person asking question did not copy model number correctly from label on side of tank.
It might also be older manufactured home gas water heater.

Question posted under Honeywell thermostat.
If you have honeywell thermostat, then model number is located on back of device.
Google that model number in following format: Honeywell xxxxx4 .pdf
That will give you on-line pdf manual that is downloadable and searchable.
Then re-post question with exact model number and include what you are operating so expert can access and read manual alongside you.

If you have some other device, then post the brand and model number, and include what voltage, and what you are controlling for best possible solution.

If you have a timer or a switch, it is possible that more information is available on following links:

You don't need to find the same exact model to replace your water heater, any 50 gallon water heater will do unless you have a brand specification that you like to stick with.
