Question about Vacuums

1 Answer

I have two oreck xl type 7 vacuums. One of them is extremely loud. I think it's caused by the motor spinning too fast. Is there a way to slow down the motor? Or maybe it isn't hooked up correctly?

Most likely problem is a broken impeller fan which causes it to be loud because it is out of balance

SOURCE: replace belt on my oreck xl

Either have to take the bottom plate off, or there is a small door with one screw to remove to replace the belt. Then it goes around the motor shaft and then over the pulley on the brush roll.

SOURCE: While vacuuming it's unusually hard to push.

Hi,
I see your post is from May. I just joined Fixya this month so, id you're still looking for a solution, I would saythe belt broken or is so stretched the roller isn't spinning. Here is an link to an online guide with illustrations for changing belt. Also check the roller brushes for wear and change if necessary. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: My Oreck XL has quit sucking. The brush turns but

Same problem here with XL9100. Bag would not expand implying no suction. Motor ran and brushes turned. Easy disassembly using common tools found that a plastic bag had been sucked up and caused a blockage prior to the impeller. Cleaned up, reassembled, and everything worked fine after that.

The roller brush on my Oreck XL Classic has only center bristles. Both sides have been worn down to nothing. It is hard to push. Why are the bristles wearing down?

Sounds as if the wheels are collapsed on one side and the brush is harder in contact on one side. In correct alignment the brush should just kiss the top of the carpet causing the bristles to flex a little.

Sparks coming from under oreck vacuum. looks like its coming from motor brushes.

Probably need to have that serviced at a repair shop. They can tell you whether or not you need a new motor or a fan blade kit.

There are sparks coming from the underside of my oreck xl vacuum.

You probably need to take that in and have it serviced at a repair shop. They can check the motor to see if it needs to be replaced or just cleaned. The noise could be bad bearings or a fan problem as well.

Oreck XL intellashield smells hot and smoky when operating. New bag and belt and no clogs. About a year old.

If it smells like burning rubber with white smoke its the belt make sure the brush spins freely. If its a electrical burning it will smell real bad you WILL be able to tell which then its a motor issue you can remove the bottom plate 5 phillips head screws opposite the motor youll see 1 screw remove it pry the duct out and look to see if there's anything stuck in the fan if not its the motor its self

The belt is on properly, however the brush will spin, then stop.

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Oreck XL Classic. It sounds like the belt may be stretched out and my needs replacing. The average belt change is every 4 to 6 months and to store the extra belts in a Ziploc bag in the refrigerator. Also check the brushroll, the gray bearing ends with say on either side the words NEW or OLD and both ends need to be identical – new/new and old/old NOT new/old, if the belt and the brushroll are OK then it may be the motor but I don’t think so. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG THEIR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. The motor has 5 wires to the motor as stated in the Oreck owners manual, tow are for the headlights, one is a ground wire, and the other two are for the motor. There are two screws that hold in the Oreck motor and a good suggestion is to use tape the wires leads and mark the wires so that you will not make a mistake as you take it apart and reassemble the motor. That way you will not make any mistakes, whether or not you have wires for a headlight or not, the rules are the same. Also refer to the owner’s manual schematic and the exploded view. Oreck Vacuum troubleshooting

Hi. If the motor is on its way out the motor noise will be eratic eg slowing down speeding up popping noise & a smell of electrical burning. If you have none of these symptoms then chances are its not the motor. Does the bag inflate or is it easy to collapse when you push the bag ? If bag inflates ok check belt. If bag not fully inflating check for blockages along length of the handle pipe its designed to pull apart by lifting up rubber sleeve at machine end of pipe, push ball latch in & pull pipe out remove any debris stuck in the pipe. Remove bbottom of machine as if replacing belt check to see if there is any debris stuck in the oppening that goes to motor fan, then check the fan blades you can see them through the port is there any missing or snapped off. If blades are missing or have big chunks missing you will need to replace. If fan only has minor bits missing then reassemble it should now worl well.
