Question about Dryers

1 Answer

Whirlpool Duet gas dryer has a gas odor. It's not from the gas line, I shut off the valve between pipe and line and it went away. Opened valve and odor surfaces again. Machine drys well, just concerned about the smell and potential leak. Any help?

That means that your gas valve (actuator) in your machine needs to be replaced. Don't use it until it is fixed.

SOURCE: Trouble with Maytag Legacy gas Dryer

Please provide the model number and I will see if I can figure something out.
It sounds like you have covered the common problems. Usually a motor is the cause for this problem, it gets hot and shuts down until it cools off. I have had some problems with the auto dry controls on the Maytags also.
Are you equiped to do some voltage checks if we need too? This would help in knowing where you have power when it quits.
Thanks/Mike

SOURCE: my whirlpool duet gas dryer (model ggw9200lw1) is taking too long

There is a rare chance that the gas supply is clogged. Dealing with gas pipes is dangerous business, don't fool with it unless you are experienced with plumbing. After checking a gas pipe, do a bubble check for leaks with dish soap from a sponge or sprayer. There are small filters and traps placed here and there in the plumbing of some units. They are similar to the ones on a washing machine hose, but smaller.

SOURCE: When drying clothes in my gas dryer, you can smell

Hi, from what you describe, it sounds like you may have incomplete combustion, which would leave a residual odor while burning. Check your vent, on the outside where the flap opens and the exhaust leaves the building. Anything blocking that vent may cause an air flow problem. If you have good air flow when the dryer is running, the problem is going to be at the gas valve/burner and may need a professional. In my town, the gas company will come out and check problems like this for no charge, they don't replace parts but are good at troubleshooting. Best of luck.

Is the dryer gas or electric? But you can also try cleaning the vent tube the pipe that goes outside also the pipe that goes into the dryer it's a good chance it's full of lint.

Strong burning odor from dryer. It went away then is back today.

Hi. pull your dryer out from the wall and remove the vent pipe. Check inside the lower rear of the dryer for lint in the beginning of the exit pipe and then throughout the entire pipe. This can cause a fire so clean this before you use it again. J.

Smelled mild gas odor after moving dryer. Replaced gas line connection. Still smell gas. Tried to tighten gas line have strong gas odor after running dryer. Does not seem to be heating

The gas valve should not be opening unless the glow igniter glows and sends a signal to the gas valve. I suspect a small leak in either the gas pipe or at the gas valve. You will have to get to the gas valve to perform a leak test. While the dryer is open, replace the igniter.

My duet front loader will fill with a large

there are two water valves above the soap drawer, that are sping loaded to stay shut when power is off. if the water pressure to the machine has increased, sat due to an increase in main pressure from the water board fixing a leek further up the supply, then this could force open the valves. try turning the stop valves at the inlet pipe end, away from the machine, down a quarter turn and see if this stops it.

I have unplugged the appliance and am wondering if I need to turn off gas . If I turn off gas I will need to re ingnite my hot water heater which is in a very tight spot. However, my life is more imortant....

In most gas dryer installations, a local shut-off valve is required. This means that behind the dryer, there should be a shut-off valve JUST for the dryer.
Now that you have the machine unplugged, slide it forward a little... not too much ...be careful of the gas connection.
There should be a gas shutoff valve .
For gas valves, when the handle is in line with the gas line (when the handle is parallel to the pipe or flex line, that means that the valve is open and gas can flow thru. IF THE HANDLE is at a 90 degree angle from the pipe, or flex, it's off.
Once the gas valve behind the dryer is off, you can disconnect the dryrer's gas line without shutting the gas off to the rest of your home. That way you'll not need to relight the pilot on the water heater...
