Question about Garmin StreetPilot 7200 GPS Receiver

1 Answer

Have a six month old StreetPilot 7200 and the 12 volt cable stopped working. Unit apparently gets no power. Works fine with 120 V AC cable. Garmin says they have no parts for this unit. Is there a simple 12 V supply I could use?

This unit has no battery. There is a USB port but not for power. The AC power supply for it puts out 12V and plugs into a separate jack labeled "Power." The 12 V supply goes into the dash mount through a complex clip. The cigarette lighter end of the 12 V cable has a small tag that says "250 V 1.5 A" and has a little symbol which may represent a fuse. I cannot find a way of opening it to see if the fuse is blown, so I thought the simplest solution would be to find a cigarette lighter cable with the proper plug to match the Power jack on the GPS.

Ok, the rating of the fuse is 250V. 1.5 Ampere. Usually the tip of the lighter plug unscrews and the fuse is in the tip. If there is a black ring that goes around the tip, see if it will unscrew. There is typically a hollow bullet that slides over the fuse and the fuse is spring loaded into the lighter plug. If you do find a way to take it apart, watch out for parts that might fly out since it is spring loaded.

I think I see the cradle that you are talking about here:

If you have a multi-meter, you can plug in the lighter plug and measure on the cradle pins to see if you have +12V there.

First, make sure that the unit really does run off of +12V. Most Garmin units really run off of +5VDC and there is a charger/regulator that reduces the +12VDC to +5VDC. Look at the power cable and see what the output voltage is. Does the unit has a USB port?

Here is the fix direct from Garmin...

The following procedure will update a file in your C5XX and correct the power issue you are experiencing with your Garmin.
A.) Let the Garmin sit without power for at least 24 hours.
B.) Plug the C5XX into your computer (using a usb port in the back of the computer) with the cable provided with the unit. Allow the C5XX to charge on the computer overnight (with the computer staying on). Proceed to “C” the following day.
C.) After removing the face plate on the front of the Garmin press and release the reset button. At this time the C5XX will reset and power on.
D.) Update your unit’s software. To update your unit’s software, click on the following link - and click on Unit Software. Next click on DOWNLOAD. You will be given several choices to download. For most users, unless you know otherwise, select “WebUpdater Ver. 2.4.1 as of Apr 03, 2007 Download”. Next agree to the terms and conditions and on the last screen click DOWNLOAD again. If given the option to RUN or SAVE, click RUN. Next click Run to install the program to your computer. The first thing the program does is try to update itself. After that, attach your device (GPS) to the computer and follow the prompts to update your unit. If you are asked if you want WebUpdater to check for additional updates, select yes then choose only those updates that you need.

E.) After the initial update you will be asked if you want WebUpdater to search for any additional updates – select yes.

F.) When now doing a software update on the C5xx series using the WebUpdater, you MAY now notice an update available for the PLD software in the additional updates section. You want to download this update. This should correct the power lock up issue that we were seeing on these units. If you do not see this PLD software it is included in the regular update.

G.) Disconnect the C5XX from the usb cable and let the unit restart. A message will appear on the screen stating "Updating PLD Software".
Note: the screen will fade out and go blank during this process. Do no be alarmed, this is part of the update procedure, and the screen will return to normal within seconds.
Just as a note, when you connect the unit to the power cable in the vehicle, make sure the battery icon (next to the time on the Menu screen) disappears. If the icon does not disappear, the unit is not charging and you will need to check the fuse in the end of the cord. As a further suggestion, I would recommend you pull the power cord out of the cigarette lighter socket when the vehicle is not operating. This would prevent anything that could drain power from the unit having access to that battery power and leaving the unit dead.

SOURCE: will not turn on

I contacted Garmin and they had me remove the microchip inside and see if that would fix the problem. It did not. So they instructed me to send it back in for repair. They gave me a return number and then ended up replacing the unit with a new one. My unit was under a year old so it was no charge.

Remove silver face plate by prying with your fingernail. Remove 4 screws, open and unplug the connector that the battery and speaker wires connect to. Wait 30 seconds and replug. Problem solved. Put back together and turn on. If this dont work, you have bigger problems.

No.......the C340 STREET PILOT has a hidden reset button. Put your fingernail in the slot just under the GARMIN name on the front face plate. Gently pull the face plate outward. Don't take it all the way off. The reset button is on the right side of the front screen just under this plate. Use a pointed object and hold the button IN for 3 seconds and unit will turn off. When you power it back up it will REBOOT.

The unit will not turn on, even when plugged into a power source. Unit was working fine a week ago. Garmin Streetpilot C330.

Have you checked the fuses in the power cable? There is a reset button under the front bezel. Try pressing that to see if your unit comes back to life too.

Can't see screen when plugged in to vehicle

I would venture a guess that the cable you are using in the vehicle is not a genuine Garmin cable. The units are very sensitive to voltage.

Anything under approximately 10 volts - the Garmin assumes it is plugged into a USB port (Active Cradle)... not a vehicle... and it dims for quicker charging.

Switch to a Garmin OEM cable.

Battery on my garmin c510 sat nan wount hold a charge how easy is it to change

Had the same problem. Fixed with a new battery. Takes the same as a Streetpilot c530 and can be purchased anywhere on line. A 10 minute job with a soldering iron.

1. Open face plate. Unscrew 4 screws. Remove battery connector and clip.
2. Unsolder the wires to the two speakers - 4 wires.
3. Remove the sticky wrap from the old battery and place around the new one (to stop it rattling).
4. Solder back the new speaker wires.
5. Plug in battery, reassemble unit and charge Garmin off PC wih usb cable.

Garmin c530 Streetpilot

I just called tech support at 1-800-800-1020 and I was told that the battery on the unit may be so low that it won't power on even with a power source. The unit actually uses more power than it's taking in from the car charger. I was told to plug it into the computer using the USB cable and give it a few hours to replenish the battery. Apparently it should be plugged into the computer ever so often to keep the battery from getting too low.

Display problem

Have you tried resetting the unit? It sounds like you may have a problem that Garmin needs to address. I would try to reset it first, then make sure you have the latest firmware loaded on the unit. If you still have the problem, it may have to be sent to Garmin for repair.

No power

Hello, You might check the fuse - it is located in the end of the charger cable. The round end that plugs into your lighter unscrews and you will find a fuse in there. Also try plugging it into a USB port on your computer while it is running to see if that USB cable will charge it. If that does not work I would call tech support for the Unit and see if you can get it fixed or repaired under warranty. Good Luck - Dr. Know

I had the same issue with mine during a trip. Probably needs to be reset. See page 31 of the users manual on Resetting your c340. Once I did this it worked fine.

Garmin 330 battery

"my garmin c330 will not charge in the car while traveling?it has a full charge when i head out but after 4 hours it shows low battery,i was thinking the gps was supose to charge with the car adapter plug will not charge."

There is a problem with the cable or the cigarette lighter power supply. If the cigarette is working then when you start the car the Garmin should turn on and when you turn off the engine the Garmin should shut down. If you are manually turn the unit on/off then it is not running off the cigarette lighter power supply. Check to make sure there is power coming from the cigarette lighter.
