I really wish to recover the data on the disk before formatting, although I tried to format it but that also failed as Windows is unable to access the drive and the only message I get "parameter is incorrect". Please note that my computer is detecting drive D when it is pluged in but cannot be accessed! There is no hardware defect, only I need to know if there is a way to fix the incorrect parameter and make the disk function again. Thanks

It's either a hardware-problem or a software-problem. Thats's the reason why I've included 4 steps to see where the problem is located. I forgot to mention there's another thing you can perform under Windows, which is even shown at YouTube. Please check the following link.

You might consider the following steps first :

1) Try to remove the USB-cable from your PC. Now try to re-attach it to another USB-port at your PC.

2) Try to connect this external disk to another PC.

First of all, you should check if your harddisk is still under warranty and even may give it a call at Toshiba customer-service for help.

If you've lost warranty or prefer to solve it yourself, you can go for the following steps :

3) If this didn't solve the problem, there's a chance there's an internal failure of electronic components at your USB-enclosure. In such case it's best to remove the disk and see if you can reconnect it inside your computer to the motherboard. If the problem is solved, than, yes, it was a failure at the USB-enclosure. It's time to look for a different USB-enclosure which you can buy quite cheap online, or at a local store.

4) If the problem still maintains, you're problem is a bit larger: the harddisk got seriously damaged / defective.

Testimonial: "Thanks a lot B. Boelens for your support, however that did not work. I got no problems with the USB port on my laptop, also the portable disk has no hardware issues, something went wrong with the parameter! Have you got a way to fix the parameter? Thanks a million"

SOURCE: XP doesn't recognize my external 500 GB WD My book essential edition hard drive

I had the same problem some have posted about. I had a lot of data on my drive and then one day it didn't show up in "My Computer" anymore. I had to assign a separate drive letter to the external drive.

Plug in the drive.
Right click on "My Computer"
Click on "Manage
Click on "Disk Management"
On the bottom half of the right side you should find "My Book" assigned to a disk number.
Right click on "My Book"
Click "Change Drive Letter and Paths"
Click Change
Select a new drive letter and hit OK

Hope this helps some people out.

I:\ is not accessible.the parameter is incorrect.......i m used seagate expanision portable drive,model SRD00f1 500 gb

you have moved your hard drives around on the usb port, your playlists are still trying to find the last location it was in, you havent lost anything, just your pc is looking for the files where it remembers them, search for one of your files you know of, it will still show up.....then right click it and select "open location" take note of where the file is located, it may be calling your external drive D: or E: now....i would delete all playlists and create new playlists to where they are located. also make sure the folder they are stored in is shared.....just right click the folder where the files are know to be hiding, and select properties, and enable share....and share type select "everyone" and reboot

yes you could simply format the harddrive in Fat32 using your macos that would be the best solution but don`t forget to backup your data by copy pasting the files on your mac or something else and after that to move them on the external hdd again to be available on the windows machine

You probably damaged the drive from sudden disconnection of the signal line. I would suggest trying it on one other computer before considering it trashed.

If you really can not get it to work anymore, you could try opening it up and connecting the hdd directly on a IDE/SATA port in your computer. This will only work if you have a desktop, for a laptop you would need all kinds of converters.

WD 1TB MyBook suddenly needs reformatting?

most likely cause of this is that the partition tables are corrupt....you'll need to run a checkdisk on the drive..
go to command prompt
change to drive letter of the drive you want to scan
type in
chkdsk /p

you should get a message about windows finding some faults and repairing them....once done you should be able to access the data on the drive

In this case the MOST effective way is to try some data recovery program to see if it can help rescue your data on your WD external.
