Question about Arris SURFboard Cable Modem

1 Answer

Hello, i having problems with my internet connection. I have the charter 5mb service. I am using a Motorola surfboard modem and a Belkin router. Most of the time the connection is fine, however many times throughout the day, especially first thing in the morning, the online light on the modem is not solid therefor no connection. Other times the modem is fine, but the connection light on the router is off, therefor no connection to our wireless notebooks. It happens if we are on the internet and all of a sudden we can surf the net, i go and check the connections, and one or both of the router/modem is disconnected. And also when we are not using the computers, i will walk into the room and notice that the connection light isnt solid on either the modem or router. IN order to fix this i am having to unplug both and plug in modem first til it gets all solid lights, then plug in the router then it usually comes back on, but its annoying and i am getting disatisfied with not knowing whether or not i am going to have a connection from one moment to the next, any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Have you contacted Charter?  The first thing that they will want to know is if it happens when you have a pc directly to the modem?  They can check your modem stats to make sure that they are within specs but they will not help with your router.  You can look at your stats........http://192.168.100.1/

Have you tried checking the physical connection of the modem? and please unplug anything else that is connected to the modem while trouble shooting. 1st powercycle the modem thats unplugging the power cord from the modem for a bout 6 to 10 secs. then plug it back it. go to your modems defualt gateway.if you dont know it. it should be written on the modem as well.check for winsock errors. and ping errors as well. if everything is ok, but still having a problem. there might be an emi/rfi electro magnetic interference or radio frequency interference. thats why its advisable to unplug a router. but the main problem might be the router. always obtain the ip and set it to dhcp and that should do the trick.

Can i use a Bright House Surfboard Router for Verizon FIOS Internet?

If you can reset all the parameters, however if you know all the info I would suggest that you use something like a Belkin. You need the IP "name" for you, the connection password, and you really need to know what you are doing.
The only ISP that cannot easily be used with another modem is Sky as they deliberately use a different encoding. Yet again another reason NOT to use sky, it is difficult to monitor, and to use other equipment.

As long as your laptop doesn't have a firewall enabled then you should almost always be able to get connected by directly connecting your unit to the router.

Here is how to Determine if you Windows Firewall is enabled
Once it is disabled try resetting your Belkin back to Factory default Settings.
If all that still doesn't work I would attempt attaching it to the modem, and know once and for all if you router is working correctly.

Hope this help, and if it did please remember to leave Feedback/Testimonial. Thanks.

I cant get my motorola sb5101 surf board cable modem to connect to a belkin g wireless router. the light on the belkin flashes orange when i try to connect it to the modem but no internet connection

I have a similar problem. The common denominator seems to be the SB5101. I have a brand new Belkin Surf 300N, same issue. The modem will not give DHCP to the router. I can connect fine via ethernet to the modem directly.
This modem seems to be a dinosaur.

I want internet on the other side of house

In order for you to accomplish that goal what you need to buy is a wireless router that can be located on the other side of your house so computers there can have internet access wired or wirelessly connected to the router. You can get a wireless router from Linksys, Netgear , Dlink or Belkin.

You need to disable the UPnP function on the Belkin router. Log into the router(192.168.2.1), and look under System Settings. If you haven't changed the password on the router, the default password is blank, i.e., no password.

Can I use my router just as a Wireless router with a DSL .

i doubt it will work. most times the cable companies give you a modem/router all in one box. the problem is there in no inbound connection to recieve an internet signal other than the cable cord connection. with the dsl modem you will need a seperate router. they cost around $40-50 on avg

Losing connection

I assume this is a cable modem? You need to call your cable company and have a trouble ticket created. I worked for the cable company installing cable for quite a while and I bet my paycheck the signal getting to the modem are below specs and that's why the modem gets dropping the internet connection.

Hope this helps.
