Question about Mtd Products Yard Machines 158CC Tiller

I have a bolens rear tine tiller that will not run. The carborator has been completely cleaned, new gas, new spark plug, new oil, and new gaskets. It seems like it is not getting gas from the tank. Will start for a few seconds when gas is added to the spark plug hole but when you pull out the spark plug after it quits it is completely dry. Also, when trying to pull start it sometimes the cord will lock up and it almost pulls your fingers off.

I have the same problem with my new 158cc Bolens tiller. The briggs and stratton engine will run for a few seconds after you pump the primer. It must just be running off the gas that is being pumped in by the primer bulb. It's a brand new tiller that was purchased last fall from Lowe's and they said their warranty only runs 90 days.

Is the fuel filter clogged? you may need to check the engine compression for bad valves or rings.if the compresion is off it wont get gas . check the fuel filter first though and keep me posted.

I have the same issue Bolens 158cc 24-in Front-Tine Tiller bought at Lowes. The throttle lever is just a fancy kill switch cause it doesn't move the throttle rod AT ALL. That means you only have go and stop. I can get the engine to power up a little if I use a screw driver... I suspect some safety minded liberal or some green energy fruit cake is to blame.

did it run out of gas when you added gas it could be that the fuel line has plugged up with something from the bottom of the tank take the fuel line off and try blowing threw it and take a air hose and blow out the carb and carb cleaner

Ihave a craftsman 5hp(briggs&stratton) reartine tiller that won't

Hi.....I am assuming that you have a bowl type carberator on that tiller. If so, the bolt on the bottom of the bowl, is the main jet. If you remove it, you SHOULD, see a hole drilled from the top down to a hole cross drilled thru, near the bottom. Run a small wire thru these to be sure they are clean. Other then this, I'd install a new needle and seat. You can purchase just a needle and seat set, no need for a complete rebuile kit. You will also need a bowl gasket, and if you have a primer bulb, you will also need a new intake gasket or the primer will not work worth a darn. Hope this is of some help, good luck

First pull your spark plug out reconnect to the plug wire and ground tot he engine body
Pull the starter cord and see if you have a good clean spark that goes to the electrode and not to the side of the spark plug.
If no spark check your off/on switch

I have a 2003 huskee rear tine 5.0 when i spray starting fluid in it's runs 4 a few seconds then dies. I have cleaned the carb and the gas tank and line, I still seems that it is not getting fuel

Did you clean out all of the tiny holes in the main jet of the carburetor? I assume you also put fresh fuel in it as well. One other thing, a compression leak (loose spark plug, bad head gasket) can make it act like it's starving for fuel. Good luck. I'd still place my bet on the carb having one or two holes plugged in the main jet.

1st I would drain the gas and put new in. It loses octane over time. Then try new spark plug. Also you may need a new diaphram in the carburetor. They are cheap and sell them at most hardware stores.

Engine looses power, then speeds up, then looses power again

This sounds like the little fellow is getting hot. Are you using a good oil in the fuel don't skimp on that oil use the best you can find and get a new plug to sounds like the oil is killing your tiller.
