Try downloading and installing the latest audio driver from the HP website. choose your operating system and the website directs you to the drivers. sometimes windows updates install the wrong drivers ans causes the hardware to malfunction properly, so try uninstalling these updates using system restore point, if this doesn't work do the first step.

The mute button stays red. it will mute and unmute the icon on the screen but no sound from internal speakers ,only headphones will work.

You may need to try to re-enable the sound driver. Go into the start menu, then to control panel. If you're in Vista or Windows 7, click on Hardware and Sound. Then go to the Device Manager and find Sound, video, and game controllers. Expanding on the tab, you'll see the audio device. Right click on that, then select "disable". Once disabled, you right click on the same audio device and select "enable". Hope this helps!

No sound on my HP Pavilion dv4000 notebook, how do i install sound processor

Sound processor is built in to the machine.

Above the keyboard is a row of buttons - look for the one that has a loudspeaker symbol followed by a circle with a diagonal line through it - that is the mute button. Press it to mute/unmute. There are two other buttons for volume up and volume down.

I want unmute my laptop which has the mute button on all the time

Try looking for the the speaker in the lower-right corner. Single-left-click on it, and unselect "Mute". It might either be a speaker with a no-sign or the word "mute" with a checkmark next to it.

HP Pavilion Quick touch Problem

DUDE, i have the exact problem with my laptop. I actually find myself keeping my finger posed above the mute button as well, it's ridiculous. Might be fluke, but after dowloading this software, i played an entire youtube video without it muting itself. You could try it, here's a link: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-62436-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=2093&product=3795469

I was having a similar issue. My volume button worked fine muting and unmuting the volume, the light just stayed red either way.

I went into Device Manager, then expanded the Sound, Video and Game Controller options, I rolled back the driver and it was an instant fix for me :)
