Re: I here a high pitch noise from cpu when power offed....

The poster probably refers to the computer itself as the CPU. (Not essentially a mistake, a common use of the term from history.) If so, the high pitched sound comes from a **** PSU. Changing it is recommended. It's taking it's dying breaths.

If your app was auto saving, then yes, it should be in the hard drive. Sounds like the cpu might have gone, but if the hard drive can be removed and placed in a ~$20 enclosure with a USB interface you should be able to use anohter computer to access the files.

What power supply would you recommend for a quad core processor?

Greetings - Even though the CPU is Quad core you could get by fine with a 350W PSU, unless of course you're going to have a killer juice sucking high end video card and/or are planning to overclock your CPU.

A good quality 450-500W would give you plenty of margin. More important to get quality vs rating numbers. Cheaper manufacturers tend to overstate the specs of their PSU's.

Enjoy your new CPU!

I am using an AMD anthlon 64 X2 processor 3800 + and my computer doesnt turn on and makes continously high pitched beeping sound .This just happened yesterday and I dont know why , plz help .Thank you

try to check out your video card and try to clean it or your memory card.

these are the steps to clean and remove corrosion on your cards:

1. open your cpu and remove your video card and memory card our the slots.
2. get an eraser and gently use your eraser to brush the pins to take off corrosion.
3. after doing this, gently put your card to their corresponding slots and press it so that
the contact point of the pin and slot will hold so that your board will read your cards.
4. close the cpu and start your pc.

Turns off

I assume you have a desktop computer. It is either the CPU is overheating or the 'Power Supply" is overheating/failing. Put your hand at the top back of your computer where the power supply is to feel if the fan is blowing air out the back. If there is no air coming out the back, then I think the fan has failed and the power supply overheats and fails. Repair or replace the fan before the power supply totally fails and has to be replaced.

Also check the fan and heat sink on the CPU. If they are loaded down with dust, the CPU is not getting cool enough, With power OFF, remove the fan and heat sink, clen them and put them back. That will do wonders to cool the CPU.

We have a computer tower that needs to be fixed. we got it from our neighbors that were gonna throw it out. it can still turn on but all it makes is a humming noise, then it acts like it's gonna start up...

Sounds like to me that either you're missing a bootable OS or its the harddrive. If it beeps, chances are the OS. You can buy a copy of Vista and have someone install that for you or you can do it yourself. But if you are nervous about such or dont know about computers, have someone else do it for you.

Cpu overheat

Todays CPU fans are set to automatically up their RPMs if the processor overheats or is overtaxed. But the trick is when the fan itself is not cooling enough but rotates and makes this sound like a heicopter. Since you see it turning, you may not realise its cooling is poor. The best and long last solution is get a brand new fan and install it. The baby will stop crying.

Good luck.

Laptop will not power up!

If you have replaced the motherboard I would say it is most likely the CPU. If you had not replaced the m/board I would think it was one of the power chips on the board that sends power to the cpu. If the heat sink compound had turned to dust on the top of the cpu that is certainly not going to help with cooling the cpu down. $500 sounds awful pricey for a CPU. What type and speed is it? May be able to dig one up for you in the basement that will work. At least for testing purposes. Post your type and speed of cpu that will work in your laptop.
