Can't get external monitor to work properly

Hi folks, I haver a second hand Asus laptop with Windows XP Professional on it. I also have an oldish Dell VGA flatscreen monitor model E172FPb I plug into the external monitor port. The monitor fires up fine for the intial Asus screen, and for the Windows initial screen, but when the Welcome screen comes on the monitor turns off - that is, there is just a black screen. Can you help me please?

This half solved the problem.  The right click on 2 (#5 item) did not bring up a choice of 'enable'  (I am on XP Pro of around 2003).  But there was an OK which I clicked.  This brought up my desktop picture which was very nice - but nothing else.  No icons, no start bar, or  anything.  When I open, say, Word on the main computer, it does not transfer to the add on monitor.  Do you have any suggestions about where to go now?

    The suggested solution was:

    0.Right-click on your desktop (anywhere
    there is not an icon).

    0.Click Properties.

    0.Click the Settings tab.

0.You should see two monitors with a
    "1" & a "2."

    0.Right-click on "2" and click
    enable

0.Your external monitor should come to life.

0.You may want to make some adjustments with
the resolution, and this option is on the same screen.

When I connect my ASUS monitor to my Dell laptop the ASUS monitor displays nothing instead it says "No Signal"

Hi

You do not say if your laptop screen is working or not or why you want to use an external monitor.

Assuming the laptop has no fault and boots properly, to send the laptop image to an external monitor, once you have booted into Windows, press and hold the Fn (function) key bottom left of your keyboard, near the Windows Logo key, then simultaneouly press the Function key (above the numbers) with the image of 2 monitors, 1 dark, 1 bright (often the F4, F5 or F6 key).

If the laptop's screen is faulty and the above procedure does not work, there may be damage to the graphics card which will probably require specialist repair.

I hope this helps.

Hi there! Yesterday I was installing Windows XP

Sorry to hear your having issues installing the OS.

There is two problems your facing one is the disk is so scratched that the system can not read the disk or the hard drive has bad sectors or clusters which are failing when being written to.

You have two options to fix this one is to make sure the cd is clean an or replace your hard drive.

General disk read error message tend to be from hard drive cylinder's.

My AL1716 doesn not work in DOS

Hi

The screen probably does work in DOS but the laptop doesn't bother sending it any signal in DOS, it's only when windows starts that windows takes control of the displays and shoots out a signal to the external monitor

I don't know how you would get round this because you can't see your BIOS which you need to go in to and set the primary monitor to external.
