I have the Sentry - timer for my outside lights. One dial is for pm and one for am. The lights are not going on when I put the dial on 7:30 pm. I have to manually turn them on and then off in the morning,

Ginger,

It sounds like an older Intermatic timer
Does your timer look similar to this timer? EJ351
Here are the instructions for this timer:
Usually if the timer is still made, I can find a manual and piece together a solution... but I don't know this timer, and if it is malfunctioning ....

It may be time for a new timer > the EJ351 is inexpensive, simple to install (just 2 wires) and simple to program >>> one knob controls both AM-PM.

Have wh40 model. I switched out motor, but when put back together a piece fell out and not the on/off switch is loose. I do not think switch is working unless I can get the u shaped piece back in.

The WH40 on-off switch is a manual override. Using the switch, you can turn power on when timer has power turned off. However the manual override is also the piece that the timer pins contact to mechanically click power on-and-off.

So if the on-off switch is broken, the timer will not work. Looking at the Wh40 sitting in my office, I cannot see the exact part you mention, but it looks like the on-off-switch is not a repairable part. And it would not be easy to work on, since the yellow timer dial does not come off.

You can buy a new WH40 and then swap out the insides. Keep the same box and just snap in the new timer. However the new WH40 on-off switch sticks out so you may have to leave door open on the old box.
Here is a photo comparing old and new WH40:

Timer turns and i hear the clicking but the machine does not correspond on all the cycles. low spin on permanent press works but not high spin on normal cycle, rinse works well and it does drain but only...

saved $50 bucks at least and here's how......very easy. pulled out my washing machine from the wall. took the top cover off. (just the cover holding the timer button, load size, etc...) mine has 2 screws and 2 bolts taken off with a pair of wide nose pliers. once that is off look at the timer (from behind ofcourse) you will see a whole bunch of wires (all different colours and at least 20 of them) all going into a plastic piece that is connected to another plastic piece that is attached to the timer. pull these plastic pieces apart. WAIT!!! before you do, there is a clip that you have to push so that these 2 plastic pieces will come apart without force. once you press that little clip they will come apart easily. then if you look inside the plastic piece attached to the timer you will see what sort of looks like a bunch of flattened out pins. these are connectors and mine were dirty preventing a good connection. i used a metal nail file to clean them ( you can use a wood nail file or sand paper). then i put everything back together and was surprised and happy that everything worked like new again! good luck!!!!

How do I replace the "notch" (which is stripped) that is used to align the knob to the actual timer? This is on my GE Washer

It depends on which piece you are talking about. If you mean that the inside of the knob itself is stripped you just need to grab a new know off a similar machine or get a new one from a parts store (pretty cheap).
If you mean that the metal piece sticking out of the timer is stripped then you need a new timer since that piece cant be replaced individually. You can get a new one from an appliance parts store, just take them the model number of the machine and they can look it up and most likely tell you how to replace it as well.

My Kenmore dryer heats as it should but the timer dosent move and the dryer stays on.

This is a common problem. Dryer timers are advanced by a motor that turns gears and moves the dial (and internal switching) forward. The timer needs to be repaired or replaced. More than likely the latter since most timers are riveted together and cannot be repaired (unless you're someone who can put a geared jigsaw puzzle back together without any instructions since they normally fall to pieces when opened). I have tried to repair some timers and have been marginally successful, but to have a piece of mind, order the part, have it replaced (wire for wire when the unit is unplugged from the wall). If the timers look different, it is still possible that they gave you the correct timer. Verify that the new and the old timers have the same letter and number markings on each of the wires.

It is best to label the wires as you remove them from the old timer with a piece of tape and a sharp pointed marker. That way there is no question which wire is which.

Hope that helps you.

Change out timer.

Try twisting the knob counter-clockwise and see if it will come off. If not, look at the timer knob and see if it has a two piece front. Sometimes you have to pry a small cover from the time to get access to the holding clamp.

RRemoving the washer starter dial

Yes, stop pulling on it. Axcess the rear of the timer there will be a smaller hole with a black piece of plastic inside where the knob shaft would be if it went all the way through. use needle nose pliers to grab the plastic piece and pull out. it is easier if the knob is pushed in is gets recessed a little more when you pull out the knob. The new timer comes with a new plastic piec pull it out then push back in to lock on the knob again.

If your timer has a gray rubber ring on it, the timer is in 4 pieces. Pull the top middle part out. Then there's a white locking piece in the center. Once that's out the other 2 pieces will pull out. Note: The photo shows the top cover removed. The locking pin is the white center. RanchMom
