Question about Dell XPS M1530 Laptop

Won't continue past loading screen; chkdsk /r showing no sign of progressing

My computer won't turn on past the loading screen. Start-up repair says there is "corrupted system volume." Chkdsk /r has been running for 30 hours and is still processing the same file it was processing 27 hours ago. What should I do?

Have you tried starting your PC in the safe mode?
If you can make it this way, you could try running System Restore.

I'm afraid that Chkdsk really isn't doing anything productive any more.

Since this is a fairly young system, it probably came with AV software from someone but often these supplied versions do not update after the trial period so you may not have been protected after the trial.

The only option in this case is that you can try running a test on the hdd for its failure otherwise you have to reformat the computer.

Smart disk error 301

Anytime the Error 301 messages appear on your computer, it is due to corrupt or damaged system files.

If you do not fix this error immediately, it can lead to additional system issues, blue screens and hardware problems.

Windows is resuming message

XP repair
When you boot with the Win XP install CD-ROM, it loads a minimal operating system, similar to DOS, but compatible with Win XP. At the first screen you select install Win XP (not Recovery Console) and at the next screen it will find that you already have Win XP and offer to attempt a repair. This repair should not touch your Applications or data; it just reinstalls the Windows files. This is great because when it works you don't need to reinstall all your software.

You can try this first before the XP repair :
Chkdsk
Take the Windows XP disk. Boot from it, then DO NOT select F2 (automated system recovery) but continue through the procedure until you get to the point where you can choose between installing Windows XP and entering the Recovery Console. Once you get into the Recovery Console, do chkdsk and fix potential errors on your disks! Chkdsk C: /R

My XPS 1530 will not shutdown, it only restarts

Try running chkdsk /r and then restart the computer. to do that, click on START, RUN, in the open field, type 'cmd' and press <enter>. A dos window will open. At the blinking cursor, type 'chkdsk /r' and press <enter>. You will get a message that the drive can't be locked and do you want to run it the next time Windows starts. Type 'y' and press <enter>. Now shutdown the computerand restart it. Chkdsk will run and it may take some time. Depending on your installation, you will see a blue screen that will show the progress. Sometimes the screen will stay black and the hard drive light will flash. That's ok. Let it run until Windows loads. Wait until it is completely loaded and then try shutting it down normally.

Good luck and let me know how it works out.
