SOURCE: My daughter wanted to run

Your can be repaired, but it's generally not worth the cost. Running the oven empty usually destroys the magnetron tube which generates the microwaves. The tube is replaceable, but it's a costly part. And the repair should be done by a professional because of safety concerns. Between the cost of parts and labor, it's usually not much more (and sometimes even less!) expensive to buy a new oven.

While the kitchen timer feature of a microwave is handy, many people accidentally kill their ovens this way. You might want to pick up a small digital timer when you shop for a new oven. It's cheap insurance.

I ran my fridgidaire microwave for 15 minutes while it was empty. Now it runs and sounds normal but will not heat food. Any suggestions?

take it in for a proper diagnosis
running a microwave empty for any period is detrimental to the magnatron and causes it to overheat and fail
a diagnosis is needed before a decision is made

Chances are the thermal fuse is gone that protects the magnetron. Unplug microwave, remove top, [several screws] look over to the keypad and slightly to the left, you should see round fuse mounted on the inner chassis at the top, change with the same size and rating, if all goes well the microwave oven should function.

My daughter wanted to run the timer on the microwave but accidentally ran the oven for 16 minutes. It overheated and blew out. Can this be repaired?

I just ran my GE microwave for 7 minutes while empty. Heard a pop sound and now it won't run. Is is ruined?

The worst thing you can do for any microwave is run it empty as you have found out the hard way. What has happened is RF from the magnetron has reflected back into your magnetron. Some models even have an RF filter window that has the same color as the insode of your unit but a fiber appearance. Running the unit empty causes the RF to burn through this RF filter and stright back into the magnetron itself. Some units have a thermal protection thermostat on the magnetron that turn off the power to the magnetron when it gets too hot. Since you heard a pop you could have a bad load capacitor that has failed or the chassis diode itself has failed. You can take the unit in for service but if they tell you that the magnetron needs replaced I would think hard about having it repaired as the cost can be as much as 50% of a new unit. the Cap and Diode replacements are much more resonable repairs. Good Luck.

Unit is dead after accidentally running it empty.

If you ran it for that long with nothing inside, there is a good chance it self cooked.

It can probably be repaired. The economics of the repair is something you will have to judge for yourself.

To assist you, may i suggest you visit www.repairclinic.com and check on some major parts for your make and model. If the parts = more than 25% of replacement, I think id be moving on. Expect to pay a pro at least $100.00/hr labor. You should NOT do it unless you are skilled at handling delicate and lethal electronics. A microwave can kill. Another thing, after you fix it, you have a lot of $ invested and still have a old machine that ran for 13 + minutes empty.

Oven won't function after 5 minutes of cook time with nothing in

It's posible that since it was running empty, the magnetron overheated and a thermal cutout or thermostat located on the magnetron opened.

Magnetrons may be protected by a thermostat, which will reset when it cools, or a thermal fuse, which is a one-time use device. It is also possible that in some cases, a thermostat will fail when opened.

In the worst case the magnetron may be damaged due to running empty.

I hope this will solve your issue.

Good Luck.

If my solution proves useful please accept it.

Arjun
