Question about Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Hi is it possable to hide my i p address from outsiders to make my pc a bit safer. if so how can i do it iam not all that up on pcs but can find my way around most things on here thank for the help..
Hi tony tiler,
If you are connected directly to the internet via a modem, is the only way the outsiders can see your IP. If you have a router or smart modem, then you are shielded from the outside. The router or Smart modem uses what they call NAT. NAT is a translater to all the devices that require an IP address. The process is sort of simple, your ISP or internet provider gives either an assigned IP number or a leased IP number, (meaning it dynamically changes every 24-48 hours) and the Router NAT function takes on that number to the outside, then it converts each device that is connected to it, to an internal (non-seen to the outside) number in the sequences of 192.168.1.###. ### could start at 1 and go to 255. Then when you send a email or when browsing the internet, everytime you send packettes of data back and forth the router knows what you sent, and when your reply comes back it remembers which internal device sent it and forwards that pack of data to that device. (or computer in a network environment)
If I've totally confused you, I'm sorry, but the jist of this is to get yourself a Router so you can be invisible to the outside. If your not sure whether your modem is smart or not, you can test it, by going to a command prompt. (click run, type CMD) then at the flashing cursor, type in "ipconfig" less the " symbols. Then it will show you what your IP address is. If it starts with a 192.168. type number vs. 62.925.##.### then it's a smart modem or router.
Router's range from very low cost of $20,00 to very expensive, for what you're trying to accomplish I wouldn't go to fancy on a router. I like Belkin routers, for their ease of use, basically plug it in and it works. No messing around with it. Or their popular ones like Dlink, or Linksys. They also have the wireless routers, so you can connect wireless laptops, wireless printers and so on.
Good Luck, and don't forget to leave a rating.

Http://anonymouse.org/ this is a free anonymizer does a decent job slows you down but routes you to mutiple points does more than a proxy a nat router will keep your local ip your machines (address ) hidden but your public ip (home) address is known. which can tell people alot about you.proxies are ok but it is only one point of protection between you and the internet a good anonymizer (also called web proxy) will bounce you a few times (open proxy) before you go to the public internet.don't confuse this with a caching proxy or a content filtering proxy.probably more info than you need hope it is helpful
