Question about Seagate FreeAgent Go 250 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive

Seagate FreeAgent 250 GB cannot be opened after a chkdsk is done

I have been using the FreeAgent 250 GB for almost 6 months with no problem. Yesterday I used it in other computer (a desk top). When I used it in my notebook I found there was something wrong with the temp folder and it gave the instruction that a chkdsk should be done. I did a chkdsk but it stopped after the Stage 1.  After that, I can't use the drive at all. When I klik on the Seagate FreeAgent Launcher the window that appears shows first there is no disk.  Later it shows that it's there but the Ceedo does not work at all. I used the diagnostic tool and it runs and the results says the disk is functioning.  BUT still no change when I try tu use the disk.

    Thanks for the advice.  I might have been too soon looking for help before trying everything or looking for other solutions.  I did solve the problem and the disk is now functioning OK.  What I did was to do a chkdsk /f directly (without going to the cmd first).  I had to do it twice.  The first was either aborted or whatever (I left the notebook for a couple of minutes and when I came the chkdsk screen or window was gone).  I insisted and tried again and this time it worked.


    The conclusion should be that "the directory was indeed corrupted" maybe.  But it took m away my half night sleep.

Hi,

Sounds like either the drive was disconnected while running or may be having problems. CHKDSK automatically shows up if windows senses formatting or media problems. The fact that it did not complete tends to be indicative or hardware failure. Although the Freeagents are good as a series any drive can fail without warning.

If you go to www.seagate.com and download SeaTools it will allow you to test the hardware of the drive. try the S.M.A.R.T. check first as it's the quickest test and will spot most early drive failure with ease.

If the drive passes the smart test try the short generic, then the long generic. If any of them fail you likely have a dead/dying drive and will need professional help recovering your files, a service I perform as a part of my everyday job. If it passes them all then the problem is logical and although you can ask a pro to fix it you can download some inexpensive software that will get you files back(on a different drive) the simply use the freeagent software to reformat the unit and continue using it normally.

hello

unplug both cables from the computer and form the AC outlet, for 1 minute.
follow tehse steps

1) plug AC adapter into wall and other end into seagate drive. leave it for 1 minute
2) after 1 minute is up, plug USB into seagate and then other end into computer. wait 10 seconds.

the drive will be recognised by computer.

Cant access my drive


Try a Chkdsk on it.

Start - Run - type: cmd
In the DOS box type:

chkdsk_H:_/f_/r (don't type in the underscores)

This will take a few hours, if it's recognized.

250 gb seagate external hard drive is recognised b the computer but doest open. when open command given, error message comes 'i/o error' please help me


Sounds like the drive is dying. Your only hope might be to try a scandisk and defrag. From My Computer, right click on the drive and go to Properties. Select the Tools tab. Run the Error-Checking tool and make sure all check boxes are selected. Once that finishes, run a defrag from the same menu. If those don't work, the drive is likely done. Sorry.

which files.... if you have "show system files" selected in your folder options in your operating system it still won't let you open them as that is it's way of preventing you from deleting or changing them

go to command prompt and run the drive lattre of usb drive and type chkdsk /r/f and let it scan the drive.

start | run | command |
chkdsk x: /x /f /r (where x: is your seagate hard drive partition)
