Question about Teledyne Laars Pool & Spa

1 Answer

My pool heater does not come on. The controller is sending 24 volts to the gas solenoid, but when I plug it it, you can feel the gas solenoid open, but it closes almost immediately and cycles like this a few times. Could I have a bad gas solenoid?

A number of things could cause this. Basically the heater is "calling for heat" but for some reason there is no ignition at the pilot or main burner. Probably best to get a tech out to check it.

If the unit is lighting then shutting off then repeating it isn't rectifying, means not sensing the flame. May have a bad flame sensor or ignition control. I'm guessing your AGS is indicated on the GUI also.

SOURCE: Hayward pool heater H100ID keeps blowing GFI

First, I don't see any heaters in my parts wired thru a GFCI. Why did you resolder inputs on board. Usually, those are not repairs that are acceptable. If the pins have shorted, then you need to replace the board. Could be a problem with the ignitor, but this might be one that you will need to call a pro in for. Did you install the heater yourself???

Control panel is blank and the gas company checked the pressure, it is at 5. The heater is not activated.

first of all, if the inlet gas pressure was only 5 inches water column the heater will under fire once it runs. that pressure will have a slight drop once the heater is running. So, the gas company should have known that and realized the gas line may have been undersized. Secondly, if the control panel is blank you probably have a problem with the transformer inside the heater. The secondary side will send out 24 volts, the control panel also runs on 24 volts.

Gas valve solenoid have continuity? No continuity replace the valve
Getting 24 volts to the gas valve? No voltage from control board check fuse on control board.
Replace control board.
Any rollout switchs that are open and you won't get 24 volts to the gas valve.

No blinks normal running igniter glows gas comes on wont run

Check for 24 volts across the gas valve when Ignitor is glowing. If no, bad board. If yes, bad gas valve or blockage.
On a call for heat, the 24 volt thermostat sends a signal to the control module. The control module will indicate a call for heat with a light on the control either blinking or remain solid depending upon model. The inducer (exhaust) blower will purge all gasses from the furnace and pressurize a pressure switch. Once the pressure switch tells the module to continue, the electronic ignition will energize and send 120 volts to the igniter. The igniter will glow and you will be able to see it if viewed thru the small inspection port. Once the igniter gets hot enough, it sends a signal to the module opening up the gas valve (24 volts). Either a pilot will come on or the burner tube will ignite then spread the flame to all burners. Lastly a safety sensor will be looking for a certain temperature within a few seconds and the furnace will continue to operate and the room air blower will turn on in a minute or two.

What could go wrong? The unit will not run if there is no signal from the thermostat (bad thermostat or broken wire), the control module does not sense a signal from the thermostat (bad control), the inducer does not energize (bad motor), the pressure switch does not close (blocked vent piping, bad switch, plugged condensate hose), the igniter does not energize (bad control, bad igniter), the gas valve does not open or there is no gas (bad gas valve, broken wire, no gas), the pilot does not light (dirty pilot), the burner does not light (bad burner, plugged orifice, not enough combustion air), the flame does not spread to each burner (bad flame spreader, dirty flame spreader, more bad burners), the flame safety sensor does not detect flame (dirty or bad flame spreader, bad flame sensor, broken wire, bad control), or the room air blower does not energize (bad fan motor, bad control).
