Question about Parks Optical 13.5hp Briggs And Stratton Intek Lawn Mower Engine

Mower starter pinion gear won't stay on flywheel to start it

The mower has a 12.5 Br & Stratton engine/mod 289707 / type 1179-E1 /code 980529ZB. The starter gear won't stay up on the flywheel to start the engine. The starter just spins rapidly. I tried manually turning the pinion gear and engaging it wjith the flywheel, but as soon as I hit the starter, the gear drops back down and spins. Do I need to replace the starter? Is there a way I can fix this one?? Thanks! John

Want turn over but but has power to starter

If you mean "Won't turn over but has power to starter" instead "Want turn over but but has power to starter" than change the starter. My guess, the pinion that shoots out the gear to turn the flywheel to achieve crank is broken and spins uselessly. When you turn the key you hear it spin but it can not turn the flywheel to start the vehicle. The other option is less likely but I have heard of someone trying to start a ceased engine so many times that the gear that turns the flywheel gets stripped and just spins.

The decompressor is a valve lifter usually on the exhaust valve, the only adjustment is to correctly set the the valve clearances, if they are too slack the lifter will not activate.

From your description it seems that the starter is not engaging to turn over the engine. First ensure all the connections of the thicker cables to the battery, starter and tractor frame are clean and tight. If starter motor is turning but still not engaging it will mean that the pinion on the starter motor is binding on the shaft. You can buy a new starter pinion gear from your local B & S agent.
To replace pinion, remove starter motor from engine, remove old pinion and put on new one and reattach starter to engine. If fuel & spark are right you should be up amd running.

Starter motor whirls, does not engage / start engine. Battery is fully charged

The starter is actually an assembly with a motor and a solenoid. The solenoid does two things: it closes a contact to send electricity to the motor, but it also moves a gear on the motor shaft upward to engage a gear on the engine flywheel. Most likely, you will have to replace the starter assembly to fix this.
Just in case, you should also check the gear on the engine flywheel. It's where the starter pinion engages. If it's missing several teeth, you could just be in that 'dead spot'. That can temporarily be solved by turning the motor a little bit to get to a good spot - but remove the sparkplugs first! And eventually you'll end up in the dead spot again. It is a more expensive repair.
Good luck! Please rate if you find this helpful, thanks!

Starter spins but will not engage flywheel...

Check the flywheel for areas of damaged teeth also. Broken teeth on the starter drive gear may inticate damage to flywheel also.

Rex,

When you installed the new ring gear and put the flywheel back on, did you use a new flywheel key (Briggs recommends using a new key anytime you remove the flywheel) and did you torque the flywheel nut to 85 ft lbs? If not, that is where you need to start troubleshooting. Remove the nut from the flywheel and observe the key and key ways making certain that the key ways are exactly aligned.
If they aren't or you can not see them very clearly, pull your flywheel and inspect the key. If it is damaged at all replace it and be sure to torque the flywheel nut to 85 ft lbs.

Did you remove the ignition armature (the coil) when you removed the flywheel? If you did, did you set the air gap to the proper specification? It should be set between .010 and .014 (ten to fourteen thousandths)
Did you tighten the screws that secure it to the engine good and tight?

Check all of these items first and if you don't find anything obviously wrong, get back to me and I will see if I can help you further.

How many different types of starter motors are there to suit a 12 hp ride on mower

First you have to have a flywheel that will support a starter. It must have a toothed flywheel. Second, the brand of motor. Briggs & Stratton, Tucumseh, Kohler, Onan, Wisconsin, ect. Was it originally electric start? Has battery tray, key switch, ect? You will need the Serial Number, Model Number which is on the "blower housing", or the recoil start housing on the top of the motor to replace with the correct starter. You probably can find one at any small engine repair shop, maybe a lower cost used starter. But you need the information above to obtain that. Model #, Serial #, Make, ect. If this mower wasn't electric start originally, this will be a major change. Flywheel, starter, wiring, battery, switch, and the like. Not for the faint of heart. It can be done, and has been, but will be difficult. If it is a Briggs and Stratton, you should find parts easy to access. And Tecumseh. And relatively economic.
