I have two unlinked (neither networked) computers connected to a Canon I9900 printer. Both computers are running Windows XP. After I connected second computer to printer, which can print from, the printer is 'offline' to the first computer. How do I get printer online to first computer and can I print from both computers?

It usually means that the printer is off, not connected to your computer or your computer does not recognize it. If your computer doesn't recognize your printer, go to control panel and click on add new hardware, then follow the directions . After trying all the above try using your printer once again.
Printer Offline cause if your printer isnot available like if your printer is installed in your computer oflaptop and the printer is not plug in or printer is off. that cause printer offline. right click and look for online and click thats it your printer is online now. if the printer is connected on the network and it is offline it means your printer or your pc is not connected on the network.
The users who are experiencing offline errors while using the Canon printers are suggested to check the connections, settings and printer hardware before proceeding any further. The connection to and from the printer shall be verified thoroughly by the users and any anomalies if found shall be fixed then and there. As these errors can also be caused by printer hardware issues, the users are suggested to check with different key components of the printer like the cartridges, feed tray and more and fix any issues if found. Restarting the printer and the computer after following the above mentioned procedure will help in solving and preventing the offline errors with your canon printer.
Does the copier reports that you need to change paper size? If yes under printer properties set eg A4 as custom. Check under printer progress window is it set to use printer offline. Under cmd type ipconfig and compare subnet and gateway with your copier.
If nothing of this send more specific what didi you try to do.
-Do you know this printer IP?
-Can you ping this printer?
-How many printers do you have on your network?
-Did all the printers on your network offline or just this printer?
-Did you check the network cable that connected to your printer?
-you might try to restart printer spooling service on your print server
-If your server is still functional, you might try to reinstall/set up this printer on network
