Question about Garmin eTrex Summit GPS Receiver
I have blank lines in my screen. I think it needs to be replaced. Can I do this myself or do I have to send it to Garmin?
Here's what worked for me (YMMV): Take the unit apart according to the link above (save the two tapes - they can be reused). The edge of the glass display is covered with what looks like black electrical tape - what I think happens is the tape comes loose and pulls the connections apart. To fix the problem, just push down on the tape to restick it - should work for a while. Whatever you do, don't pull the tape off - it will ruin the unit. When you reassemble it, put the ribbon cable in first, then the screws - and be careful you don't cross-thread the screws - if you do, you're screwed (pun intended). Garmin should recall all the eTrex units and replace this obviously flawed display. Hope this helps

See discussion at http://californication.mtbguru.com/2005/11/20/deconstructing-the-garmin-etrex-vista/ Its possible that there's a bad connection at the ribbon cable, but most likely its a bad connection at the edge of the LCD glass panel. I've had two eTrex fail because of this problem. Don't pay the riduculous price Garmin asks for repair - just buy a new Magellan unit. If you must get a Garmin, go with the high-sensitivity receiver.
