Question about FAIP 1500 PSI Electric Power Washer

1 Answer

Starting capacitor failed. Replaced it and found new capacitor getting very hot. Does anybody know if this is a capacitor start or permanent split cap electric motor? No easy way to open the motor case to see if there is a centrifugal starting switch that has failed shorted. If this is the case, might be easier to try adapting a refrigerator starting relay... What are your thoughts?

Hi, more than likely a psc motor on a `small pressure washer.
The usual problems with the capacitors failing is down to a poor power supply, wether it be using a long extension lead of too small a size, or the power supply itself.
check voltage to machine while using it, a voltage drop will cause characteristics of motor to change, phase angles etc..
A refrigerator starting relay would not have the required amperage ratings for a pressure washer..
hope this helps , andy

Yes, it did fail on a long extension cord. Yours is the second vote I've gotten for a PSC (Permanent Split Capacitor) motor. ie no starting switch. Furthermore, found that there is a big difference in capacitor types. PSC motors use a RUN capacitor which has a plastic dielectric. Motors with a starting switch (if employing a capacitir) use a STARTING Cap. This one is an electrolytic type and will overheat when used in a PSC application.

  • the start capacitor will also be a lower voltage rating and intermittent duty rating as it just gives the motor a 'push' to get it going, then drops out of circuit..

My pro 110 when i plug it in the fan motor will not turn and kicks out.could the rotor be bad ?

Don, the heater you describe typically utilizes either a split-phase motor or possibly a PSC motor. Both are reasonably low starting torque and have permanently lubricated sleeve bearings that wear out over time or no longer receive lubrication from the bearing wick. The result is a motor that can no longer overcome the drag of the worn or dry bearings due to the lack of starting torque.

A long shot is IF it is a PSC motor, it COULD have a bad run capacitor causing motor stall. But that's surely a long shot requiring a little more in depth technical troubleshooting requiring either a digital capacitor tester or an analog multimeter to determine.

My LG Split 1 ton Continue poor working with under voltage 180V (Due to Long distance Transformer), Once its capacitor have to change this summer. Now i arrange Stabilizer which give 230V. Before...

Unfortunately, there is not a great deal of information about LG splits available, but is you are talking $12,000 to to repair, then it is much cheaper to replace since a two ton complete is less that half that amount.

Have an intertherm split system. Outside condenser compressor is starting, can hear freon flowing, but fan motor will not kick in. Gets hot then kicks breaker. Have replaced capacitor with factory part.

If that system is gas heat then you have 2 fan speeds Lo speed for heat and when ac is called for the motor speed shifts to hi with the use of a fan relay.
Some various fan relays in use today. themobilian_2285.jpgthemobilian_2286.jpg

Fan will not spin on it's own. I must take the vent cover off and spin the fan manually. I think I need to replace the capacitor (sp) but don't know what it looks like.

If the fan is a capacitor start, induction run motor, then it is a good chance you need a new cap. This will be a round or oval shaped can that has spade connections on the top. Depending on the unit, it may have a dual capacitor. These capacitors provide the power necessary to start the fan and the compressor. Be sure to replace with a very close match as the existing.
If the fan is a PSC (permanent split capacitor) motor, then it will have a run capacitor wired in series with the start winding, and this capacitor never comes out of the circuit, providing greater running efficiency. This capacitor can be mounted directly to the motor, or placed remotely.
Hope this helps

What type of start capacitor do i need for a goodman ckl 30 1L

Air Conditioning Compressors are Permanent Split Capacitor motors that use a "Run" capacitor. You can purchase a "Kick-Start" which is a hard starting device.

Goodman AC unit - fan starting outside but not getting cool air.

set the thermostat at alow temp normaly after few minute the compressor and the fan will start , if are stying off check control signal is energising the compressor relay if ok check the relay coil; if all are ok ncheck the capacitor then check if the air is still hot means the charge of freon is less and also before charging check the leak

Whirlpool portable AC, compressor works, but no exhaust fan

there are 3 possiblities
  1. something obstructing the lower fan motor (or exhaust motor)
  2. bad fan capacitor
  3. or bad motor
to check any of these you will need to disassemble the unit to get to the blower. there are several screws located at various points on the plastic housing covering the unit. Once removed you should be able to check for motor obstructions visually. for checking the motor and capacitor you will need a volt/ohm meter and ideally a capacitor checker. you could try to spin start the motor while it is powered up this could be a possible sign of a bad capacitor if it will start when you do this or if the motor will spin freely while powered down and will not spin start when powered up. I know that is kind of confusing but its how they work. GO FIGURE.  thanks Peyton

Warranty, probably not ??? and gateway will try to sell you a new model !!
If it is warranted than it may cost a fortune with them to ship it back and forth !!??
You are probably haing capacitor failure starting and the low volatge is affecting the video card.
Even if you look at the capacitors and they are not bulging, it doesn't mean that they are not failing (some bad ones look like new)
I fix a lot of these.

GE Microwave problems after HV capacitor replacement???

The rectifier diode could indeed be bad. But first I would want to know what value (in uF) the old one was and what is the value of the new one? If they're too far off, the difference in the capacitive reactance could throw off the "tuning" of the circuit. The uF value of the capacitor is optimized in relation to the other components used in the system. Of course, you'd also want to be sure your new cap is at or slightly above the working voltage rating of the old one, too.
