How do I change fly wheel key

You need to pull the blower housing off. Then remove the the starter cup from on top of the flywheel. Pry off the flywheel usually by insert a prybar under the flywheel pulling up while tap on the side of the flywheel. you will see the key in the center of the flywheel. after removing the old key, replace flywheel then insert key into grooves after you line the two grooves up.

Running rough and backfire

Sounds like a timing problem(flywheel key) sometimes the key will shear part way do to wear, flywheel key is located on crank end under flywheel, disassemble air housing to expose flywheel crank nut unscrew nut (impact) to see key and keyway slot in crank determine that key is not sheard and is in center of crank keyway slot. if sheared you will have to use a puller to remove flywheel from crank. install new key and reinstall flywheel with an impact gun .

Stihl saw igtion timing

The ignition timing on all Stihl saws is, as far as I am aware, set by the key on the flywheel and not changeable. If there is a problem check the flywheel still has the key moulded in place in the tapered hole that goes onto the crankshaft . If it is missing you can get a replacement after market flywheel or cut yourself a 'woodruff key' of the same thickness as the groove on the crank shaft and cut a corresponding groove into the flywheel EXACTLY where moulded key used to be. Refit the flywheel with the woodruff key in place - possibly sticking it into the flywheel with 'Locktight'. Make sure the flywheel is tightened fully onto the taper of the crankshaft when refitting otherwise the grove in the crankshaft will get wrecked!

Engine turns over but wont start

It sounds as though you may have a sheared flywheel key. The keys are made of aluminum and shear easily if the flywheel is not tight. Remove top cover and flywheel retaining bolt/nut. Examine key for location with slot in crankshaft. If sheared, orient the flywheel slot and crankshaft slot so that a new key fits. Be sure flywheel and crankshaft mounting surfaces are clean and free of oil/grease. Tighten crankshaft retaining bolt/nut to 90 ft lbs. Flywheel posisition is maintained by friction between it and crankshaft.

My son hit a log with my js25 walk behind mower now it won't run.

He more than likely sheered the key in the crankshaft. When the key bends or breaks it throws the timing off and the engine will not start. The key is there to prevent damage to the crankshaft when you hit an object. You will need to remove the engine cover and then use a puller to remove the flywheel. Where the flywheel connects to the crankshaft you will see the key which is either broken or bent. All you do is buy a new one and replace it.

Shearing of flywheel pin on starting 12 hp snapper

When you the key this time, put the flywheel on first then the key but this time use a little grit between the flywheel and crankshaft. Something like grinding compound. It will keep the flywheel from moving plus make sure you torque down the flywheel nut good.
Good Day.

I have a cub cadet push mower with a 173cc ohv engine. i was cutting grass the other day and fire came out of the muffler and now it acts like its not firing maybe like it jumed time but not sure. thanks...

most likely a sheared flywheel key, pull the cover off the flywheel and remove the nut that holds the flywheel on. The key slot in the flywheel should line up with the key in the crankshaft if not pull the flywheel and install a new key, or take it to a small engine repair and they will do it for you. If the key is good, reassemble the flywheel nut etc and check for spark at the spark plug and see if the spark plug is wet with gas if you have spark and gas and the flywheel key not sheared and it still won't run, you may have an internal problem

Mower wont start

You will need to replace an aluminum "key" in the flywheel. Whenever you hit something, the key is designed to shear so you don't break something major.

How do I change flywheel key

remove the nut that holds the flywheel on.right hand threads.once the nut and starter hub is off the keyway will be can tell if it is broken then.if it isn't put the hub and nut back on.....problem somewhere else.if it is broken...take a small hammer and tap the flywheel on the oppisit side of the keyway.usually only takes a couple of hits from the hammer.once the flywheel is off the key comes right out of the crank shaft......replace the key, reinstall the flywheel.(some times you have to hold the brake off so the flywheel will slip all the way on shaft) install hub and nut.hope this helped, let me know........................
