Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Am working with a Dell SX-280 XP SP3 purchased due to update done at a local school, and am preparing machine for donation. I have removed references to network-accessed programs and re-configured as single workstation (was a station in the school's Domain). I find programs that have multiple updates (or multiple occurrences), and am unsure which of these I can eliminate. I will appreciate advice as to which of them are redundant -- so I can remove them, or remove and install an up-to-date version. Here is the list of remaining redundancies: "Internet Explorer" --- both version 7 and version 8 are present "GIMP 2.6.2" -- along with "GTK+ Runtime 2.6.10 rev a (Remove only" "J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0" -- Updates 10, 11, and 6 are present "Java(TM) 6" -- Updates 11, 3, 5, and 7 are present.

SOURCE: Slow performance caused by unnecessary programs???

If your computer is running really slow, have you thought about cleaning it with windows disk cleaner? If your computer is otherwise working normally and you haven't loaded any programs that your want within the last couple of days you can also clean up your restore points and save loads of disk space. To do this go to Start>programs>accessories>system tools> Disk cleanup and tick the boxes that you want to clean for example tempory files etc then click on the tab that says more options and clean up system restore, it will still keep your most recent restore point. It will ask you if you are sure that you want to do this, click ok or yes. If you haven't done this before it may take a long time to open while it is compressing old files and determine how much space you will gain. But be patient, the longer it takes, the more space you gain because it is locating files that can be deleted. I hope this helps.

OK let me start by saying I didn't ready any of the above. The simple answer is to buy a pci sound card. That will take care of the problem cheap and fast. It's likely that your onboard sound died on the motherboard. I used to own that board and random things would fail on it all the time.

Sound card should run you $20 or less.

I installed and used the NComputing x300 on windows XP-SP2 on Dell Optiplex GX-280. At first it was working. Latter I get a Virus attack in my computer and formatted the Computer with the same OS. Then I...

You need to re-register the software and the devices. Reboot after registration all should work fine. BTW - I'd recommend installing SP3 (will minimize virus attacks due to increase security patches) and contact NC TS for updated X300 software, it's free so they won't charge you for it and your system will be more current.

I have a dell machine and i got windows xp cd with sp3 with it but i cant activate the key or make it genuine

Your CD is not a "Genuine" Dell OEM CD, that is why you need to activate the OS.

You can buy an original Dell OEM CD for your PC which do not need activation and passes Misrosoft Update validation.

I HAVE A 6 YEAR OLD DELL WITH SP 2. IS THAT THE LATEST UPGRADE?

Hi,

The latest service pake for XP is SP3, you can download and install it by performing a Microsoft Update by clicking on the the start menu and above where it says "All Programs" look for Windows/Microsoft Update.

Once SP3 is installed i recommend you perform another MS update to update SP3.

I have an old ibm net vista with ms 2002 xp sp2,i have downloaded 2008 xp sp3. and would like to replace the old os with the new version. can this be done.

Hello nymandavid,

Yes it can be done. I would recommend you turn on automatic updates and let windows find the update for you, or run the windows update program from the start menu and install that way. The individual file of the SP3 update that is available on Microsoft's site is intended for large installs where more than one machine is being updated. Windows Update has a much smaller SP3 file that takes less time to install. I'm not sure what version of the SP3 update you have without more information on how you obtained it, but I would recommend not using it and following the examples I've given you.

Hope this helps, and remember to leave feedback if you found this to be helpful. Thank you.

There are indeed many people and schools who need computer for their learning. If many hearts go to that school needs, there would be many children be educated especially on this IT age.

Donation

It's hard to get big box stores to buy advertising in small local publications. I presume that this is a yearbook or a local paper. The best way to do this is to go to the store and ask to speak to the manager.
You need to present your case as a benefit to the store not a request for donation to your school activity. The best case would be that the kids in your school purchase or influence the purchasing of almost all the electronics for that that age group. It would be prudent for the manager to advertise in your publication because he would be not only reaching his target audience now, but also the ones who will be buying his products for years to come. Everyone knows its best if you can get to your customers early and build a loyalty to your brand.
Good Luck
