I am having trouble with my Curtis DVD 8723UK. It comes up with an error message saying wrong region when you try to play original copies of dvd's. If you enter copies or cd's these both work fine.

    Many thanks for any help.

  • kirstygarrat Apr 23, 2009

Thanks for your help Kevin. I have been told that someone on this site has the details of the firmware update however when people have previously tried to contact Curtis they are unhelpful and not willing to help.

The dvd player is an English version and the discs we are using are Region 2 and until about a week ago everything was working fine. Then one day we put a dvd in it came up with this error message as has every other original dvd we have tried to play. So I don't think it is a problem with the player needing to be unlocked.

Thanks very much for your suggestions though.

  • kirstygarrat Apr 23, 2009

Thank again for your help I had considered copying the dvd's but it seems like quite a job.

If "lifeishell" is still out there I wonder if he could possibly forward me the details of the firmware update.

Many thanks again for your help

  • kirstygarrat Apr 23, 2009

Thanks again I have just tried to email Curtis directly so will see if I get anywhere with that.

  • kirstygarrat Apr 23, 2009

Thanks for your help. To be honest the unit is a little basic and I have gone through the menus but there is no facility to change the region code, unless I am looking in the wrong place!

    Your help is appreciated.

  • kirstygarrat Apr 23, 2009

Thanks again I have tried but unfortunately no luck.

  • kirstygarrat Apr 24, 2009

thanks for your help unfortunately as the unit is quite basic there is no facility to enter a region code. I have been advised that as this unit had been working fine it is probably a firmware update that is needed so if anyone is able to assist with this I would be very grateful.

  • kirstygarrat Apr 25, 2009

Thanks have just tried this as described but unfortunately I am still getting the error message.

Thanks for your advise. Can you advise if you need to have a disc in the unit when trying to press clear. We have turned the unit on tried to press hold and clear nothing is happening except the unit is continuing to display wrong region. Please advise if you know what to do.

Try this on both Curtis models:

Turn the player on.
- Press and hold Clear until the screen turns dark.
- Now enter a region code (0 is defult, or 1 - 8).
- Press and hold Clear. The opening screen comes back.
- The default code (Region 0) is reset when the unit is turned off.

It seems (and this should be verified on more players) that if you enter the number 13 instead of the zone, it makes the player multizone permanently.

I read detailed description of your problem.
And I'm a system programmer for embedded systems like DVD players, MP3 coders,iPODs ,etc...

My group works on contract basis for programming the devices of branded company devices.
So, I wanna let you understand that please don't waste your labor & precious time over it. Actually, while writing software for such devices we are already instructed by companies to code them according to legal issues. They give us chart sheets & specifications for original "disks". By using a particular algorithm we get to know whether your disk is having proper credentials or not. If you try to use same old version of software on your DVD player then it will only play OLDER ORIGINAL DVD's. Since, new original DVD have new standard codes & your player's software can't identify it. So its shows such "wrong region" message.

And unfortunately, after "out of warranty" there is no support provided for software of such DVD players & codecs.

So, either you afford new DVD player or keep playing "pirated or copied" DVD's. Only older original DVD will play and new original DVD won't play.

I hope you understood technical reason behind it. So please don't take so much hurdle for it.

With regards,
Shyny

Actually such problem is because of hardware problem like motor failure...use better quality of stepper motor which can throw the tray of the unit of unit outside when you presses such keys...

Hello, thank you for choosing FixYa!

It seems that you may have to try this generic unlock code for Curtis devices.

Turn the player on.
- Press and hold Clear until the screen turns dark.
- Now enter a region code (0 is default, or 1 - 8).
- Press and hold Clear. The opening screen comes back.
- The default code (Region 0) is reset when the unit is turned off.

Although this would need to be verified regarding your specific devices, it seems that if you enter the number 13 as a zone number, it makes the player multi-zone permanently.

Beyond this, Curtis does not have much in the way of an under-ground following, which means there is very little documentation or experimentation available for research; however you should find that the DVD section of the Box.sk portal should have some various materials for you. I looked for about an hour, but there's nothing regarding your products as of now.

I realize that this may be frustrating, however it may be required to send the product in for service. Please try the above code and let us know how that works for you. Thank you.

DVD's are coded to play only in certain regions where they are sold, this has to do with copywrite laws
Turn the player on.
- Press and hold Clear until the screen turns dark.
- Now enter a region code, USA and Canada are region 1 (0 is defult, or 1 - 8 ).
- Press and hold Clear. The opening screen comes back.
- The default code (Region 0) is reset when the unit is turned off.

It seems (and this should be verified on more players) that if you enter the number 13 instead of the zone, it makes the player multizone permanently."

It appears like you have 13 pending charges for different peoples solutions. I'm not sure exactly if all thirteen are still pending, but it is on my account statements. Do you know how to cancel the fee? If so please do so. I do not feel I deserve you money since I did not resolve your issue

To verify what you've said, none of your original discs are working? This would then be a definite problem with the player itself. This actually seems quite common unfortunately and being that curtis isn't supporting the unit. It does seem there should be a way to update the firmware, but if curtis is no help there is not much you can do. I would recommend purchasing replacements, or just copy your dvds so they are region free. If you need further assistance let me know, also please take a moment to rate my solution appropriately.
    Thank you,

Your welcome. I too saw that post but doesn't look like anyone has heard back. It definitely does seem there should be a firmware so I would definitely hold on to them somewhere on the internet they have to be out there. but based on y our description of their customer service it is possible its a defect in that line of players with no solution. I hope you find what your looking for. Thanks for using fixya.

If you are using UK Disk then it should not give you this error message, It seem the firmware is corrupted. Contact Curtis service center and get the firmware updated.
Else you have to look for an unlock code
    eg : http://www.dvdexploder.com/

    Let me know the status
    Thanks

I would right click on my computer --> properties --> hardware tab --> device manager --> go to the optical drive section ( dvd drives or cd drives - cant remember what the section is called ) and right click on the relevant dvd drive and go to properties --> in there you should have a region tab.

It should state how many changes you have and what region it is set to.

    I would check in there.

Also what software are you using to playback dvds, I would try using vlc ( http://www.videolan.org/vlc ) or windows media player classic.

See if those help at all.

Am guessing this is a dvd drive in a computer and not a stand alone one ( or am I wrong in thinking that ? )

Hi, if its saying wrong region. then either your player or disk is incompatable. region 1 ntsc ( USA ) Region 2 ( UK ) et,c. check your players region coding is compatable for your country, and that you are also playing a dvd with the same region coding as the player. alternatively is to try and find a region free or multi-region solution. Curtis DVD8723UK Wrong Region Problem

This may be of no help to anyone but I have the same problem and I have spoken to Curtis Support today, they say there is no fix, its a fault in the machine and must be returned to the vendor as they have no service network in the UK. I bought mine with a 90 day guarantee off Ebay and it went faulty after 100 days but probably only used for 3 days so I'm stuffed!!!

Try playing Different DVDs, Second Make sure which Region Disk your playing is it Region 1 or Region 2, If your DVD player is Manufactured in USA it plays only Region 1, If its manufactured in UK it plays only Region 2, If still you face same problem Use Lens Cleaner, If still you face same problem do Reset.
To Reset Dvd player, Remove DVD from Dvd Player, Unplug Power chord from Walloulet for 15minutes so player goes to Defult Factor Settings, Then plug back again Power chord. Turn on Dvd player insert DVD, It should Play or else Claim Warranty.
