Hi Zelda, its not un-common. You will probably find that it is a build up of dust inside the laptop. So if you know someone with an air compressor, you can take out the battery keep the screen open and blow through the cooling vents underneath and on the sides. If not you could go to a service station where you would inflate your tyres on your car and take your laptop with you and a friend to hold it for you.
Hope that helps
Steve

Can't plat need for speed world for a straight hour

Verify that the Fan and vents are free of dust, use a can of Compressed Air the clear the vents, heat sink and fan. Improve air flow from the bottom of the laptop through the machine and out the vents. Use a Laptop Cooler with multiple fans. If necessary replace the Thermal Paste on the Graphics Adapter and CPU. Overheating will cause catastrophic damage/failure to the components. When the Laptop sensors read a specific temp it will shut down to prevent damage. I'm not sure if this freeware program will work but you can try: http://www.filehippo.com/download_speedfan/ ALSO, try this freeware program. RAZER GAME BOOSTER, to disable ALL unnecessary, you select/configure, to improve Gaming Performance: http://www.razerzone.com/gamebooster It may help to reduce heat by stopping some services , reducing the CPU and Memory load.

The most easy way is to buy a notebook cooler stand. If it's overheating again you must open the case and clean cpu cooler and put some thermoconductor paste on cpu and graphic card.

6 months is about right for the fan to become clogged and need re-cleaning. You could try the basics, which is:
1) Don't operate the laptop on your lap.
2) Ensure the vents are kept clear at all times
3) From time to time, simply blow into the vent holes to dislodge any dust.
4) If you can, use a laptop cooler to keep the temperature down in the laptop.

Sorry, I know overheating laptops are a pain, but it sounds like you are already doing as much as you can to reduce/stop/fix this.

The unit overheated and stopped working

Let it sit out for a while to avoid any heat damage. It should work once again once it has cooled this is a security for the PS3 to protect the internal components. To avoid overheating place PS3 in a well ventilated place where it can get a steady flow of cool air. Do not place it on carpet or any other surface that might insulate the system. Try to reduce play time take a break once in a while. If you would like longer game time buy an air cooler that hooks up to the PS3 and increases airflow and keeps it cooler longer.

you may want to check the temperature inside you computer. While playing the game better check if the temperature will not rise. See if all fans or blowers are working. You may need to install additional fan to keep mainboard cool and prevent it from overheating.
These are most common for those laptop with higher specs.
There are laptop stands available with cooler in the bottom. This is most advisable for users who will use their laptop for computer gamings and programs requiring graphics displays.

Deadeye, the problem isn't with the keyboard but with the motherboard overheating. Grab a cheap laptop cooler from geeks.com and you will find that this will keep the laptop cool enough to play a game without key creep taking over. The DV9000 laptop from HP is notorious for overheating and dying due to improper ventilation and you need a laptop cooler no matter what else you do.
Otherwise your laptop could simply overheat and the solder will separate.

The laptop suddenly stops working . Sometimes after one hour, sometimes after 4 hours. Like you shut down the TV. What is wrong?

THis is called hanging. Most common cause is your display driver. Try re-installing the display driver and see if that fixes it.
