I have a quickplay row at top of hp laptop, buttons for sound, volume, internet, etc. For some reason I cannot get the mute lite to go off. I have not external sound. I have checked all of the usual sound places and seem to have no problems there. I can hear with my headphones just no external sound. I try to press the lite but it does not go off.

Go to your control panel and click the "find and fix problems2 link under SYSTEM and SECURITY then select the trouble shoot audio playback. Click next wait for it to search then select speakers and click next this should fix your issue. Alternatively the volume setting for one or more sound devices might be disabled or set too
low. There are separate sound controls for the hardware devices (speakers / head
sets) and the individual applications (Windows sound / QuickPlay / Windows Media
Player). For example, if the speaker is turned on, but the application is muted,
you will not hear any sound. open the sound volume mixer and check the different settings
Go to the HP Support site. Click on "Drivers and Downloads" tab. Enter the p/n (product number) from the white label on the bottom of your laptop in the box where they ask and go. The next page will offer you a chance to choose the Operating System you're using. Enter the correct one and you'll be taken to the Drivers site for your laptop. Look down the list for HP Quickplay and HP Quick Launch Buttons drivers. You must install the QUICKPLAY driver first. Also, look for the Sound category and download and install that driver as well.
Above the keyboard is a row of buttons - look for the one that has a loudspeaker symbol followed by a circle with a diagonal line through it - that is the mute button. Press it to mute/unmute. There are two other buttons for volume up and volume down.
Ok the problem lies within the software. You may need to update the driver. Yes drivers tell this device added what to do. So log onto HPs website, download the updated version. This should help, if this does not help it then becomes hardware, which is better off leaving alone do to the expense.
